Kindle formatted writings can be read on almost any electronic device. You don't need Kindle hardware. |

And what should I stop? You said it works well now. It doesn't work well. ePub works the same if not better (given your convoluted scenario or working well). iOS, Windows, Macintosh, Android, Sony, B&N, Pocketbook, and others. Face it, your solution is no solution at all for a lot of people. |

It cannot be read on my preferred range of reading devices because it uses a proprietary DRM'd format. I know there are ways around this but that is not the point, It shouldn't be necessary to slyly encourage people to break the law just to read a book/magazine. Ebooks should make reading easier but instead we are ending up reducing access to reading material... at least with paper, all books in a given language were accessible to any reader of that language... currently a series of backwards steps with the format hassles...

Your opinion... currently all the F&SF readers I know use Sony readers... and I know a lot of SF&F readers, having run a specialist B&M shop for a number of years and being associated with much of fandom...

I had a subscription to F&SF at Fictionwise, and I was able to read the non-DRM ePub edition on my Nook just fine. If Amazon sells a non-DRM Kindle edition, I can convert it to my Nook, but I consider it a sub-optimal buying experience.

I didn't subscribe before (but have been considering it) and have a variety of devices but still this is a dumb move for the reasons I previously stated.

Limiting themselves to only one provider does not sound like a good idea. And it's hard for me to imagine that Amazon would pay much of a premium to have a F&SF exclusive - it's not like they are going to be the next Amanda Hocking.
However, it is quite relevant that their current strategy seems to be failing - since they are not succeeding with un-drm'd multiformat subscriptions, maybe trying exclusivity seemed to be the only viable option, as they know that they will fail if they continue to do what they are doing. Or does Amazon pay more for subscriptions than other providers? I.e., could it be the case that there is no exclusive deal with Amazon, but that F&SF have just chosen, for now, to just work with Amazon because they will somehow make more money that way. |
