I see three serial ports (J4 & J9 & one @ bottom of pic) with terminals clearly labeled (empty thru-holes - easy to connect to (the i.MX6SL has five or six total) ).

The nook plus is an Android (KitKat) device.
The 'usual' way to root an Android device is with a file on its external storage card.
The nook plus does not have an external storage card

So the serial port is used to make the system changes manually.
(not unlike our running the 'standard' jb.sh script over the serial port on 5.6.x devices)

The author stated that the discovered jailbreak relies on a remote exploit, which could be triggered without action by the device owner.

That is what is known as a "security vulnerability".

It is impolite in the extreme to publicly release a security exploit without giving the vendor a chance to fix it first.

You can maybe get upset at the author for giving Amazon so much extra time (though getting upset doesn't really help). Yes, there is a concept of giving the vendor a time limit, to prevent them from taking too long while users' devices/software/whatever are still vulnerable. But no one here has any idea of the details of the author's communications with Amazon, or how long he has given them to fix it.
Do NOT get upset at the mere idea that the author would attempt to coordinate with Amazon.

I am not intimately familiar with the process, but from a cursory glance, I believe apps (including google market) can be installed on the new Nook without opening it or meddling with the hardware in any way. In any case, I only mention the Nook and added the link for people who might want a more customizable and open device and for whom therefore the Kindle would not be a suitable device.

I agree. It is probable that you will be able to JB the PW3 in the future (but not guaranteed), and as such, if you can return it and purchase a Kobo or a Nook Plus, that option may better suit your needs.

But if you do choose for whatever reason to keep the PW3, don't despair, and keep it in airplane mode, and be patient. The JB will probably come, but the author seems to be waiting on Amazon to release a FW patch.

I would say that 4 months (which at the end of this month would be amount of time passed since Amazon was made aware of the bug) is/was polite in the extreme, considering the amount of resources and money Amazon has at it's disposal. Amazon is obviously stalling.

If I'am remembering things correctly the jailbreak author mentioned that the procedure would require factory reseting our Kindles, it would be real nice "joke" in the end if the exploit (if it has something to do with registration process ) could be patched via server side fix!

I have books from Amazon, Smashwords, Mobileread, Project Gutenberg all on my kindle and books I got directly from authors. It is just a matter of knowing which format to get and how to sideload.
It is not as limited as you say it is.

So... you bought an E-Ink Kindle for mathematical texts, you claim you can't afford Kindle books (but you can afford to buy them elsewhere

) and you've never heard of calibre for converting your EPUBs to AZW3?

If you are referring to PDF, I've got bad new for you.
You should've gotten a tablet -- E-Ink ereaders of all stripes tend to be a miserable reading experience for PDF.
The E-Ink Kindles are certainly not an exception to this rule.

But you may want to try k2pdfopt, which can help reflow a PDF to be easier to read on E-Ink devices like the Kindle (its original target audience).

2.5 months since @Branch Delay's update, which I think suffices to explain why the clock reset.

As I said -- feel free to say he should've said enough is enough. (I am not so nice. I would've said back in October "sorry, you blew it, I'm releasing it now and maybe that will make you take it more seriously".)

Once the jailbreak is installed, it is self-sufficient.

What appears to be an alternative exists - -
Convert PDF to SVG (or svg/html5)
Both PDF and SVG are vector graphic formats so it is not impossible.

I have just been looking at some of the open source projects for converting scientific/medical/chemical subject pdf's.
Haven't tried any of them myself.

But the point is -
To keep things like those vector graphic equations, vector graphic (without trashing them into bitmaps).

4 months since announcement that he had found new jailbreak method, and plans to release it after 30 days "grace period". I don't acknowledge any clock resets , since he stated that he had already contacted Amazon (ie he made them aware of the problem, the fact that Amazon then took sweet ass time/a month to send him first reply changes nothing in my book) before making the announcement.

When it was put on hold I knew then that it would be "spring at best" if left to Amazon's leisure. Now even that starts to look too optimistic , maybe never would be best estimate.

Luckily I was skeptical about "soon in October" jailbreak release so I've kept my PW1 instead of selling it because it's running KOreader (for reading non-fiction PDFs) ... until such time I can run KOreader on my PW3. Which now looks like it will be never.

About jailbreak/entry point statement: I know what jailbreak is :P I was talking about exploit(s) used for gaining jailbreak/tricking the framework to run the script. I can't think of differences between registered and used Kindle vs factory reset-ed Kindle but the difference in registered status, /mnt/us content and probably some files i /var/temp. So it makes me guess that it's something related to registration procedure and/or "handshake" & request/response between Amazon servers and device. If success of jailbreaks is dependent on something (data, procedures) on servers and Amazon fixes that hypothetical faults then there's no difference if Kindle is still on fw 5.6.5, not firmware updated.

Which all equals to all that wait for nothing gained.

p.s. I'm pessimist by nature.
