I like Ursula Vernon's work. Dragonbreath and Hamster Princess series are aimed at younger kids. Castle Hangnail is a stand-alone. She has also written quite a bit as T. Kingfisher, for adults. A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking is quite funny.

Depends which book. I have trouble reading Wee Free Men because of the dialect. Some good stories but not what I would suggest for someone learning English. Too many subtleties and plays on words.

Wee Free Men is best listened to then read. I've listened to it and it was very good. Those words you are having trouble with work very well when listened to.

Add my vote for Terry Pratchett - an excellent recommendation.
As others noted - and I want to reiterate - Sci-Fi can be tough for the novice English speaker. This is a genre where authors often take great liberty with place names, character names, technical terminology, etc. Keep a dictionary on hand and don't be surprised if a word is made up. Finally, the conversation about "pram" herein illustrates a great point: variability within the English language. Keep a pad and pencil handy and log words that seem unfamiliar. |
