I think the best part of this is the new software for the scribe is also coming to the original scribe. Can't find the exact article, but it quoted amazon execs as saying that the Canvas, extended margin, and AI features would be coming to the original scribe via software update.

The Scribe seems exactly the same except for the bezel design (presumably now without 'the gap'). The Description says 'Kindle Scribe 1st edition - 2024 release'.

So I'm going to assume the notebook summary and Active Canvas features (and Coming soon, you’ll also be able to write your notes in the side panel and easily hide them when you are done.) will be available on the existing Scribes as well via software update.

And the Kindle Colorsoft SE is a Paperwhite SE with color display. IMO 7" is not large enough for viewing full page comics, even 8" is pushing it. But it is an $80 jump so I think it is Gallery and not Kaleido, where the jump is only about half of that for Kobo Clara Colour and Pocketbook Era Color. This does not seem like Kaleido:

Quote:
Everything about Kindle Colorsoft was meticulously designed to deliver rich, paper-like color. It uses an oxide backplane with custom waveforms for fast performance and a higher contrast on both color and black-and-white content. Its custom Colorsoft display includes a new light-guide with nitride LEDs that, when combined with our custom algorithms, enhances color and increases brightness, all without washing out details. You can zoom in on images without worrying about pixelation, and you can choose between standard or vibrant color styles.
If I'm right about Scribe there's no reason to upgrade, and I'm on the fence about the Colorsoft SE.

They say it's 300ppi B&W and 150ppi color.That's Kaleido specs, not Gallery.

I’ve seen several reports confirming the screen is in fact Kaleido 3, albeit with an extra layer and special LEDs supposed to illuminate the screen at just the right angle for the colors to look best. I was hoping for Gallery but I’m still interested to see how the Kindle fares with that extra hardware compared to existing Kaleido 3 devices.

That's incredible news for my scribe then, although i mostly use it just to read manga.

I agree on color ereaders that small being really not that useful, i would consider reading comics on a 10" only, manga would be okay at 8" but comics need that 10" imho.. But i'm curious to see how it actually looks like cause a first look seems promising and a future scribe with colors could only be better, waiting for the day we're not losing clarity and colors are saturated enough for the classic lucid paper comics.

Also, i have to take for granted all new kindles are carta 1300 right?

Perhaps but why is Amazon charging a higher premium for it? Maybe it involves other components to deliver a better color experience with Kaleido.

We'll know soon enough.

Of course Kindle format comics usually have panel view (along with full page preview), which makes it so you can actually read comics on a small screen, and see page spreads in landscape orientation. So it is a much better comic reading experience than what Kobo and PocketBook offer. Comics aside, I prefer having color to not having it (pictures, cover thumbnails, highlight colors).

So I am probably going to trade in my PW SE (which I'm barely using at all) and get one.

With the forthcoming software improvements they've given Scribe new life and I'm glad they've given current Scribe owners no reason to upgrade.

I don't know if i'd call it a much better experience just cause the text is readable instead of having to zoom "manually". Reading comics "panel by panel" with panel view can't be considered a decent solution for me... You just need a bigger e-ink.
I'd also prefer an extra function than not but i doubt they really resolved the problems coming with a color model so don't think it's worth the higher price for what it's gonna offer.

It's interesting that Amazon seems to be furthering the RTO debate in their Scribe ad -- they show the guy drawing some boxes, one of which says something about a collaboration, then an arrow pointing to "in person or remote" and then he erases "or remote"... hmmmm.

In the settings, there's a "Vivid colors" mode. I don't know why that isn't on as the default.

There is probably some tradeoff (more energy consumption, slower page turns).

Have you actually tried it? It's nice sometimes even on larger (tablet) displays, where the transition can be animated.

Weirdly they are offering only $30 + 20% for the PW SE, and the same for the much lesser PW4, which I'm not using at all. So goodbye PW4, hello Colorsoft!
