New PW2 - Uneven lighting at the bottom?

I am not sure if this is problem or if I being too picky but I notice a very dim band of uneven lit area at the bottom of the screen. Is this normal?

Looks better than the PW1 lighting... I doubt it'll ever be "perfect" unless they change to a different technology.

I have a PW1, so I can't really say how normal it is for a PW2.

My PW1 has it much worse than that picture, but I quickly become accustomed to it and hardly notice anymore.

Yes, it's normal. It's where the lighting LEDs are.

Mine doesn't look like that, I don't think, but then I never have it brighter than 7 or 8. How bright is it in that picture?

Max brightness!

Also up very close are there supposed to be tiny black specks on the white background? They can only be seen when i look very closely at the white background.

Just set the lighting where it's comfortable for you. Then, if you see any artifacts on the screen that are bothersome--such as a bright pixel in the middle of the screen, you should return it. If there is nothing that bothers you at the lighting you're comfortable reading at, you've got a good KPW2.

As others have said, the artifacts you're seeing--especially at max brightness are completely normal with e-ink. I usually keep my brightness at level 11--no matter what the lighting level is, and I think my screen is great. But, if I turn the brightness up to maximum, I can start to see imperfections such as you're seeing--it would also cause me eye-strain--especially in darker rooms.

Yeah, I just tried out max brightness and I do see the little band. But when would you ever actually use the kindle at max brightness? In a dark room anything above 8 is blinding and in a bright room you don't need the frontlight at all, no?

In a bright room, I personally tend to use the light near the brightest setting. Makes the background much clearer.

Very normal for the PW2, well within tolerances.

Why do you care what the screen looks like on maximum brightness? Are you going to use it on maximum brightness? Surely all that matters is what it looks like in the conditions in which you're going to use it. Forgive me for saying so, but it almost seems as if you're deliberately setting out to find problems where none exist.

Yes, yes, all eInk screens exhibit this. You're seeing the individual capsules in the eInk screen.

Again the question arises "do you plan to hold the reader at this angle when you're using it?". If not, why does it matter? Yes, this is normal.

Please consider your Kindle in terms of what it looks like in the circumstances in which you'll actually be using it. It doesn't matter what it does, or what it looks like, in any other situation.
