Strange problem with books disappearing
Have a strange problem with books disappearing from screen but they are still on my Kindle.
I have a Kindle 4th generation. For many months now I have only added books to it via Calibre. I have not connected it to Amazon for probably at least half a year. I'm very happy with that setup. But just last night a strange thing happened. I started reading a book that I had uploaded earlier in the day. I didn't like it, so I went to another I had uploaded about the same time. BUT the one that I had just closed out, was no longer on the list of books on the home screen. I didn't like the second one either so I closed it and it also was no longer on the home screen. I started reading another one and turned off my Kindle. It was still there when I turned it back on. But if I went to the home screen it was no longer there. I was able to find it by searching the books on my Kindle. But it no longer appears on the home screen. I can return to it if I press the button on the far left side of the kindle. This is a very strange incident. I reset the Kindle, but it did not fix the problem. Any ideas anyone? And thanks for your patience if you read this far. |

Is the date on your Kindle correct? Also, are you sure you don't have a filter on or have not changed the sorting order?

Thank you for replying Sirtel.
I am not sure how to check the date. I have never tried to do that. Plus, I had not done anything to change the sorting order or the filter. At least, not that I am aware of. Can it be done inadvertently? |

Hmm yes, I took my Kindle 4 off the shelf and apparently you can't check the date, only the time.
As to sorting, what is displayed in the upper right corner, below the battery indicator? Most recent first? Title? Author? Collections? |

searching for ;date used to work. But Amazon seem to have hidden it. Most Kindles only allow setting the time. The date is set from WiFi and/or Mobile/Cell. It typically resets to 1970 if the battery (really a cell) goes flat. You need to turn on WiFi or Mobile and it can take minutes to a day to fix the date.
Wrong date messes up sort / recent but shouldn't hide ebooks. That sounds like a Filter. |

@Sirtel
The sorting is By Most Recent First. @Quoth I don't know anything about filters. How would I check and what would I look for? |

If you page through all your books, you still won't be able to see those disappearing books? They're not in the list? |

@Sirtel
I conducted an experiment. I went to the main page and the book I was just reading was not there. So I went through all the pages until the last page (65 in this case), just to see if it got put at the end. But no, it wasn't there. So I searched my items and found it and it opened. I had made a bookmark on the last page I had read and that worked. As I said originally, last night I opened two books that I had downloaded earlier in the evening and then closed them, only to have them disappear. One of them was "defective" in the sense that it was not the book that it was supposed to be. It was a different work by the same author but in the Italian language. I read Italian, so I knew it was one of her books that I had previously read in English. I am wondering if perhaps it messed with my Kindle somehow. Any thoughts? |

There may be a problem with indexing. Search for a nonsense word (for example, fghsthn) on the homepage; you should see whether there are any unindexed books in the results. If there are, leave your Kindle connected to a charger until all the books have been indexed; if after 24 hours there are still unindexed books, delete them and add them again one by one (wait until the previous book has been indexed before adding the next one).
If there are no unindexed books on the Kindle, try connect to wifi and see if this helps. |

That does not appear to work on my old Kindle 4th generation. Thanks for the info, though. |

I don’t know if this is the same thing, but some of my books are listed as comics when they’re not comics or they’re listed as documents when they’re not documents so you may have to choose a different option on your menu on your device to see the books

The Kindle 4 has no filter options.
