Normally the office machine running Calibre would be on an internal network connected to the internet through a router. The key to giving people outside the network access to the content server is to set up the appropriate port forwarding on the router. If you do not have the necessary privileges on the office network to do this it is unlikely that your IT people would let you do so. There are ways around it but they are not worth your job, assuming of course that you are not the boss.

If you can port forward, it should not be a problem. Change the port that the Content server runs on to a port about 1000, preferably one not assigned to an application. For examploe, have the content server running on, say, port 33333. Make sure you also set a username and password. Then on the router forward port 33333 to port 33333 on whatever machine is running calibre. Then any web browser can connect to your Calibre server by entering, say, http://www.example.com:33333, or whatever the external ip address of your network is, also with :33333 appended. The machine must of course be on and have Calibre Server running.

Please use the forums correctly. Questions about Calibre belong in the Calibre forum, to where I'm now moving this.

Try: Protocol tcp/udp if possible, otherwise tcp. Remote host is blank. Remote Port Range is 8080, local host is 192.168.1.30, local port is 8080.

Good luck.

If you're making your content server available on the Internet, for goodness sake make sure that you have password authentication enabled on the content server.

IP configuration / Dynamic DNS

It is important to say that the IP you provided represents a machine inside your local network; most probably you have a modem/router which allows the connection of several devices, but have only one external (therefore internet VALID) IP, which is necessary to allow remote connections.

But here's the catch, usually these External IP's are dynamic, meaning that when the router is reset (or turned off), when it is turned on again the IP changes.

What you have to do is to set up a Dynamic DNS (you can see how here http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Set_Up_Dynamic_DNS) and configure your router to port forward connections to the correct machine inside your network (now you should use the 192.168...... IP, and it is important that this IP is also not dynamic).

You will end up with an address that will be something like http://mycalibre.hopto.org, which you must provide to the remote user for configuration.

I'm having the same problem and all these cryptic responses aren't helping. Is there a guide to set up Calibre or what? Everyone says they use Calibre to access their content server "from anywhere" but there is no actual guide on how to do it so.... how do you do it?

I figured it out on my own. The answer was extremely simple and like many people have been saying no it does not change between networks/machines it is the same universal simple steps for everyone.

All you need to do is
  • Set your usernames/passwords in calibre share settings
  • Set your Calibre port to a custom port in the setting 8080 being the default.
  • Forward your ports in your router giving it a label such as Calibre so you remeber what it is.
  • I allowed Calibre.exe and Calibre-server.exe through windows firewall.
  • Then you go to google type "Whats my IP". copy your ISP ip address (not local)
  • Then save this link: http://XXXXXXXXX:YYYY
  • XXXXXXXXX is the IP you pasted, YYYY is the Port that you set
That's all you need to do to access your Calibre from anywhere

Also unlike the "Calibre program" Which is totally useless as it does not have a built-in reader. You can actually read AND download your books with this method.

I suspect that by "calibre program" he means "calibre companion".

If that is what he means, it hardly makes CC "completely useless". I might even go as far as to say it's quite good .

what happens if you IP changes? Any way to deal with the fact that public IP addresses change all the time?

Use one of the free dynamic DNS providers such as noip.com or dnsdynamic.org.
