This Has Got to Be a Fantastic Read---4.9 stars, from 62 Ratings at Amazon!
It's _Patrolling the Heart of the West: True Tales of a Nevada State Trooper_, by Steve Raabe.
Get it _free_ right now, at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DNSC22X. As the title says, it has a (stunning) 4.9-star average rating, at Amazon, from a total of 62 total ratings. The website also has a plethora of accolades, and such like, for the book. I was immediately drawn to the book, because Nevada is one of my favorite states (in case you're trying to guess why, no, it has nothing to do with casinos, card games, slot machines, or cheap buffets!) There is a nice photo, on the cover of the book, of a typical, beautiful stretch of an isolated two-lane road in Nevada). The title of the book almost "says it all;" however, here is the description, from the book's webpage: "For decades, Trooper Steve Raabe patrolled some of the most desolate and dangerous highways in America. Alone in the remote Nevada desert, miles from any backup, Raabe was forced to contend with murderers, thieves, perverts, dope peddlers, and the occasional runaway train. While often tragic and terrifying, Raabe's true tales also abound with his signature wit and playful good cheer. Policing can be a deadly serious business, but for Raabe it also entailed buying a prisoner an ice cream cone on a hot summer day, or laughing along with some good old boys before booking them into jail, as you'll discover in Patrolling the Heart of the West. In our contentious and politicized era, when police officers are too often portrayed as either infallible superheroes or oppressive henchmen, Raabe's charming collection reminds us that cops are mostly just ordinary men and women who've chosen an extraordinary career." The price for the Kindle ebook is usually _$4.99_ but, again. it's _free_ right now. I "can't wait" to read it. (I feel that I should say a word about the publisher, Latah Books . A person's initial opinion might be that it, self-described as "one of the premier publishers in the American West," is some kind of indie or self-pub outfit. If so, considering the fact that I haven't read it yet, it would be a violation of the rules of this thread to post it on this thread. After some research, it appears to me that it is a traditional publisher, albeit a very small one. I base my belief that it is traditional one on several facts, but especially that it is located in _downtown_ Spokane, Washington, and that Google shows a (nice) office building as the company's location there. If anyone has a good reason to believe that Latah Books is not a traditional publisher, please let me know and I will move the post to a proper thread. Thank you.) Edwardian England, 1901-15: Society and Politics by Donald Read First published in 1972 by The History Book Club. In many spheres the Edwardian era was the culmination of British power and influence from its nineteenth century growth. Yet it also witnessed the beginnings of the decline which was accelerated through the twentieth century. Abroad, the British Empire reached its zenith during the Edwardian years but the military challenge of Germany was growing stronger. At home, the apparently dominant Liberal and Conservative parties were being threatened by a new political force in the Socialists. Many misconceptions about the period, social, economic, political, and diplomatic have gained currency. At one extreme, it has been seen as a Golden age, shattered by the sudden impact of war in 1914; at the other extreme, it has been portrayed as an age of crisis, its society already collapsing under pressure of internal problems. This survey presents a vivid portrait of the turmoil and vibrance of British society at the beginning of the twentieth century and suggests ways in which the history of this period has shaped the subsequent development of Britain through the century. Donald Read (1930 – 1 October 2018) was a British historian and emeritus Professor of Modern History at the University of Kent https://www.amazon.com/Edwardian-Eng...dp/B07MXK65GT/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Edwardian-E...dp/B07MXK65GT/ https://www.amazon.ca/Edwardian-Engl...dp/B07MXK65GT/ |

Too bad that it's not. I mainly would like to have the audiobook, though. The audiobook alone is available to members, here at the not-too-bad price of $10.99 to members, or 1 credit. Thanks for the post Harry! (Sorry to have botched the quote. Some of you know how technologically-challenged I am. ) Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 03-30-2019 at 05:40 PM. |
