6" vs 5"

Hi all,

I'm looking to find the practical differences between the 5" and 6" EZReader. According to the matrix, the 6" has a slower processor and the older controller, but the screen refresh time still says 0.9s. Does that mean they flip pages at the same speed they just load the initial book at different speeds? Do they "feel" the same as far as software responsiveness (I noticed all eInk readers tend to feel slow, but some more so than others)?

I kind of like the idea of the bigger screen, and I may be able to get a 6" for less than the $299 retail so I'm curious.

Thx,
D

I have both devices. Screen refresh is only part of what happens on a page turn, so the specification could be misleading. The page also needs to be rendered before the screen is refreshed, so processor speed does matter. Software design also seems to make a difference because different firmware packages do seem to feel different. For me, the 5" is definitely brisker. Either one is quite usable for me though.

If you care about images, the 8 level grey scale is way better (5") in detail.
The 5" has a Jog wheel on the right edge that make for easy page turns.

Dear dbrowdy:

What I think you are looking for is a FAST 6 inch with 8 level gray scale!! The 5 inch is far faster (my opinion) than the 6 inch EZ Reader Basic because it has the Epson Controller and 400MHz processor.

You may want to look into the Astak Mentor Lite! That has the Epson Controller with 400MHz processor, plus 8 level grey scale, plus one-touch buttons.

Read my blog at: www.robertbEZ.blogpot.com. You may have to scroll back several blogs but you will find the Mentor Lite fully explained! You can buy the Mentor Lite at www.astak.com.

You will love the screen and the speed is fabulous. I think it is running $229 or $239 today. It comes with a great case and 20 formats and a full Sudoku game and great MP3. It is kind of our best-kept secret. Comes in black or white and is a great device!

In normal use I don't notice any speed difference between the two. When run side by side, the 5" is faster opening ebooks and perhaps 25% faster turning pages.

An advantage of the 6" EZ Reader is, that as an older device with a large user base, it has more software options. In addition to OpenInkPot (has its own forum) there is for example New Firm Tirwal 2.7 TripleBoot - xPDF - FBReader and DjVu viewer with full zoom and panning around the page.
