The first in this series, The Bishop's Wife, is now on sale for $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LKIBZIW
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-bishop-s-wife-3

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the predominantly mormon city of Draper, Utah, some seemingly perfect families have deadly secrets.

Linda Wallheim is a devout Mormon, mother of five boys and wife of a bishop. But Linda’s daily routine of church-going, Relief Society meetings, and visiting church ward members is turned upside down as a disturbing situation takes shape in her seemingly idyllic neighborhood. Young wife and mother Carrie Helm has disappeared. Carrie’s husband, Jared, claims that she has abandoned the family, but Linda doesn’t trust him. As she snoops, trying to learn more about the Helms’ circumstances, Linda becomes convinced Jared murdered his wife and painted himself as a wronged husband.

Inspired by a chilling true crime and written by a practicing Mormon, The Bishop’s Wife is both a fascinating peek into the lives of modern Mormons and a grim and cunningly twisted mystery.

Another holiday title...

Merry, Merry Ghost is the second in the Bailey Ruth series by Carolyn Hart. It's on sale at Kindle US for $1.99.

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002SR2Q6O

Spoiler:
Quote:
“If I were teaching a course on how to write a mystery, I’d make Carolyn Hart required reading.”
Los Angeles Times

Merry, Merry Ghost by Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Award winner Carolyn Hart, is the spirited second appearance of spectral sleuth, Bailey Ruth Raeburn, who would never let a little thing like being dead keep her from enjoying the Yuletide holiday or solving a dastardly crime. The light and funny follow up to Hart’s critically acclaimed Ghost At Work—which Publishers Weekly named One of the Best Books of 2008—Merry, Merry Ghost is a true Christmas treat, and Bailey Ruth is a most welcome addition to Carolyn Hart’s coterie of beloved series protagonists, joining septuagenarian sleuth “Henrie O” Collins and the Darlings of “Death on Demand” fame.

Jane Austen turns sleuth in this delightful Regency-era mystery

November, 1815. The Battle of Waterloo has come and gone, leaving the British economy in shreds; Henry Austen, high-flying banker, is about to declare bankruptcy—dragging several of his brothers down with him. The crisis destroys Henry’s health, and Jane flies to his London bedside, believing him to be dying. While she’s there, the chaplain to His Royal Highness the Prince Regent invites Jane to tour Carlton House, the Prince’s fabulous London home. But her visit takes a startling turn when Jane stumbles upon a body—sprawled on the carpet in the Regent’s library. The dying man utters a single failing phrase: “Waterloo map,” sending Jane on the hunt for a treasure of incalculable value and a killer of considerable cunning.

The Death of Lucy Kyte is the fifth in Nicola Upson's series featuring real-life author Josephine Tey as the protagonist. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FJ32YF2
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...of-lucy-kyte-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
In this atmospheric, intriguing historical mystery brimming with psychological tension, an unexpected inheritance plunges beloved British mystery author Josephine Tey into a disturbing puzzle of dark secrets eerily connecting the present and the past.

When Josephine Tey unexpectedly inherits Red Barn Cottage from her estranged godmother, the will stipulates that she must personally claim the house in the Suffolk countryside. But Josephine is not the only benefactor—a woman named Lucy Kyte is also in Hester’s will.

Sorting through the artifacts of her godmother’s life, Josephine is intrigued by an infamous death committed on the cottage’s grounds a century before. Yet this old crime—dubbed the Red Barn murder—still seems to haunt the tight-knit village and its remote inhabitants. Is it just superstition, or is there a very real threat that is frightening the locals? Could the truth be related to the mysterious Lucy Kyte, who no one in the village admits to knowing?

With a palpable sense of evil thickening around her, Josephine must untangle historic tragedy from present danger and prevent a deadly cycle from beginning once more.

City of Lies is the first in the Counterfeit Lady series by Victoria Thompson, whose Gaslight series is probably better known - and certainly longer . I quite liked the first few titles in the Gaslight series when I read them in DTB, but the prices as e-books have, with a very few exceptions, never dropped enough for me to want to buy any of the later titles. City, however, has just dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, so I may give it a try.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06W9H7BDN
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/city-of-lies-13

Spoiler:
Quote:
From the national bestselling author of the Gaslight Mysteries comes the first Counterfeit Lady novel—the intriguing start of a historical mystery series featuring woman-on-the-run Elizabeth Miles.

Like most women, Elizabeth Miles assumes many roles; unlike most, hers have made her a woman on the run. Living on the edge of society, Elizabeth uses her guile to relieve so-called respectable men of their ill-gotten gains. But brutal and greedy entrepreneur Oscar Thornton is out for blood. He’s lost a great deal of money and is not going to forgive a woman for outwitting him. With his thugs hot on her trail, Elizabeth seizes the moment to blend in with a group of women who have an agenda of their own.

She never expects to like or understand these privileged women, but she soon comes to respect their intentions, forming an unlikely bond with the wealthy matriarch of the group whose son, Gideon, is the rarest of species—an honest man in a dishonest world. Elizabeth knows she’s playing a risky game, and her deception could be revealed at any moment, possibly even by sharp-eyed Gideon. Nor has she been forgotten by Thornton, who’s biding his time, waiting to strike. Elizabeth must draw on her wits and every last ounce of courage she possesses to keep her new life from being cut short by this vicious shadow from her past.

Buried Bones is the second in the extremely cozy but still fun (IMO) Sarah Booth Delaney series by Carolyn Haines. I quite enjoyed the early titles in this series back in DTB days, but sort of dropped it when I switched to ebooks and agency pricing usually keeps them quite expensive. So it's nice to see this one drop in price to $1.99

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001ODEQPC
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/buried-bones

Spoiler:
Quote:
Private investigation isn’t on the list of a southern belle's most desirable accomplishments—but it’s saved Sarah Booth Delaney's Delta homestead. Now all she has to cope with is its bossy antebellum ghost who is determined to save Sarah—from spinsterhood. Then comes the perfect social occasion: Lawrence Ambrose's dinner party. . . .

Ambrose, once a famous man of southern letters, is planning a comeback: a delicious tell-all with a bitchy ex-model as his “biographer.” As he taunts his dinner guests with the news that his book will blow the lid off Zinnia’s darkest secrets, it becomes plain that each and every guest has a secret—and wants Ambrose to keep it. When the morning-after mess includes a bloody corpse and the manuscript of the biography disappears, Sarah Booth goes digging for answers. But many who hold them are six feet under—or soon will be—and if she doesn’t tread carefully, she could join them any day now. . . .

Graham Greene's classic, Our Man in Havana, is $1.99 at Amazon.

Quote:
James Wormold, a cash-strapped vacuum cleaner salesman in Havana, finds the answer to his prayers when British Intelligence offers him a lucrative job as an undercover agent. To keep the checks coming, Wormold must at least pretend to know what he’s doing. Soon, he’s apparently deciphering incomprehensible codes, passing along sketches of secret weapons that look suspiciously like vacuum parts, and claiming to recruit fellow operatives from his country club, all to create the perfect picture of intrigue.

But when MI6 dispatches a secretary to oversee his endeavors, Wormold fears his carelessly fabricated world will come undone. Instead, it all comes true. Somehow, he’s become the target of an assassin, and it’s going to take more than a fib to get out of Cuba alive. Her Majesty’s man in Havana may have to resort to spying.
Now, every review says this is the script to a play. But the Look Inside feature shows it is the actual novel. It may be that once again, Amazon is showing the right reviews for the wrong product.

Almost all of the titles in Steve Hockensmith's Holmes on the Range series are US Kindle Countdown deals at $0.99 each for about the next 5 1/2 days, probably in honor of the new title, The Double-A Western Detective Agency, that just came out. Strangely (and sadly) enough the first title in the series is priced at $7.99, which is stiff for very old backlist, and not the greatest marketing either if you want to entice folks into trying your series. But, WTH, the rest are cheap. I read the first couple of titles in this series in DTB from my library and enjoyed them, and am looking forward to reading some more now.

The link includes a couple of other stray $0.99 titles from Hockensmith: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search/?se...price-asc-rank

“My favorite new mystery series!”
—Alyssa Maxwell, USA Today bestselling author

In 1919 England, in the shadow of The Great War, many look to the spirit world for answers. But it will take an all too earthbound intrigue to draw in the discerning heroine of Anna Lee Huber’s latest mystery . . .

It’s not that Verity Kent doesn’t sympathize with those eager to make contact with lost loved ones. After all, she once believed herself a war widow. But now that she’s discovered Sidney is very much alive, Verity is having enough trouble connecting with her estranged husband, never mind the dead. Still, at a friend’s behest, Verity attends a séance, where she encounters the man who still looms between her and Sidney—and a medium who channels a woman Verity once worked with in the Secret Service. Refusing to believe her former fellow spy is dead, Verity is determined to uncover the source of the spiritualist’s top secret revelation.

Then the medium is murdered—and Verity’s investigation is suddenly thwarted. Even Secret Service agents she once trusted turn their backs on her. Undaunted, Verity heads to war-torn Belgium, with Sidney by her side. But as they draw ever closer to the danger, Verity wonders if she’s about to learn the true meaning of till death do us part . . .

Amazon UK's Christmas deal of the day is six books in the Maisie Dobbs historical (lead up to WW2) series of mysteries by Jacqueline Winspear for 99p each. It is a slightly odd selection, being books 3, 4, 5, 10, 12 and 13 of the series.

While looking at these , I also noticed that the most recent in the series (2018), at least until the next one comes out in March of next year, is also £0.99. On the author page for Winspear, it says it's a "Limited Time Deal", whatever that means...

Constable Around the Houses is about 3/4 of the way through (sorry, too busy to count exactly) the Constable Nick series by Nicholas Rhea. It is a US Kindle Countdown Deal at $0.99 for about the next 2 1/2 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FQT7KVJ

Spoiler:
Quote:
Things are changing at Ashfordly Section police station. The sergeant is retiring and Police Constable Nick Rhea finds himself rising through the ranks, only to realise just how little he really knows about the locals of Aidensfield.

Rhea is determined to meet the locals but a rogue goat causing traffic disturbances, a spate of burglaries, and a skeleton uncovered during a renovation mean his house calls will have to wait.

Nicholas Rhea’s delightful Constable tales paint an endearing and hilarious picture of police work in a rural district and was the inspiration for the Heartbeat TV series.
