Go there. Grab MRPI & KUAL for your device.

Uncompress both. Add the .bin for kual (and other stuff if you need something else) in the mrpackages folder.

On the search bar of your kindle type ;log mrpi

Really.

But I will not read it for you, and then type it here for you not to read again.

Maybe someone else will read the directions to you.
Maybe.

Otherwise, give up on this whole idea of jail breaking your Kindle.

sorry that i bother you with my questions, but you really, really, didn't. or you did, and i don't understand. or i understood and wrote back what happened, and you didn't read

if you want to help newbies, sometimes you have to explain from their level, not yours. you are the expert, the teacher, and i am not. i'm sure to you it seems simple, but for others it is not so...

unfortunately, i already tried that a few times, with no success. anyway, i just tried again, just to be sure i did it right, absolutely nothing happens

so, to make sure i understood right, and i am not doing something wrong:
downloaded latest kual, and latest mrpi. added Update_KUALBooklet_v2.7.2_install.bin to the mrpackages folder in the root of the shared folder. also from the mrpi zip, i copied 2 folders, extensions and mrpackages to the same shared folder. then went in the search bar and typed ;log mrpi
waited
nothing
reboot
nothing

i had to close up the kindle, as it will be a gift. i can and will try anything else you guys think i can try to make it work, without re-opening it for serial, for about 12 hours that i have left i'm in europe
i think we have to keep in mind that i'm begining to think that i am not jb?
i tried the test from the original jb thread, and it also did nothing. i don't know what that means

thanks again for helping!

You skipped a step in the directions.
Let whoever you are giving it to finish the work.

Have you noticed the member IDs of people who joined this month?
We have over 280,000 members at this site, and only 1 of me.
Now think about just how much time I have to work with someone who can not, or will not, comprehend written directions?
Did you really think that sending over 20 private messages a day is going to help the situation?

I have been here for six years, and this is the only time I have had to disable my private message system just so I get a chance to do my own work.
There are a lot of people who have purchased a very expensive Kindle the past few months, people who are all waiting for me to finish the work I am doing.

Let me keep it simple for you:
You are trying to support one person, yourself.
I am trying to support over 1/4 million people.
You lose.

i understand your situation, and i have not demanded anything from you. this is a forum, not your job. if you want to help, fine, if not, the same. there are others around here who might help me too. if not, so be it. it's not a matter of life or death. i just counted the pm's i've sent you, they are 11 over the course of 2 days. they are a lot, maybe, but i've only written you because you answered. i thought it was better than to spam the thread. when you stopped i turned to the forum. i'm sorry that you are/think you are alone, but that doesnt mean you HAVE to help. unless this is your job, which i think this is not, right?
i'm sorry if i took too much of your time, but it really means what it means. and, for the n-th time you didn't help me! to quote you: "You skipped a step in the directions." this is how you answer all the questions
WHAT STEP??? if you want to help, tell me. and it will be much easier for you too. if your first answer would've been: do that, get this, next that, both me and you would've finished this so much more quickly. and had a more pleasent time too. but no, you give me half-answers, letting me (and others, as i've seen on the forums, i'm not the only one) guess stuff, take wrong steps, etc.

like @datanoise did: go here, get that, do that. so much quicker, simpler, clearer. ok, didnt work, i probably broken something while guessing my work to where i am now.

you probably will be offended now by what i wrote, maybe others will be too. i am apologising for that, i am only stating my experience. if you DO want to help newbies, please take that into consideration. if not, you will be bothered again and again by other newcomers.
and remember, it's not a job, you don't have to help

again, thanks to all that have and perhaps still will help me!

edit: maybe i've skipped a step in the directions, as english is not my first language. but now i still don't know what i've skipped

I followed https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/5_x_Jailbreak and it did work.

The wiki page isn't clear for 5.8.9.0.1 (which you decided to use) so I'm not sure the directions / files are exactly the same as those stated there.

I think you had a problem with either step 6 (JB) as you didn't see the JB message or 7 (Hotfix) as once you upgraded your firmware it didn't seem to be jailbroken...

As I understand it (I'm no specialist, just another newbie!) you now can't downgrade to 5.7.4 or 5.8.9.0.1 to try to do another JB so you're stuck with your not JBed kindle. UNLESS it's jailbroken, but if that's the case I don't know why mrpi doesn't work: I had no trouble reinstalling my stuff using mrpi once I upgraded my firmware. Again, to me it seems like your device isn't JB or that you forgot to install the hotfix.

Good luck! (and at worse, you still have a working kindle, with calibre it can be used to read quite a lot of stuff!)

I'd assume it's greyed because there is no update to install. Once you are jailbroken you don't need to use it: I don't know what you're trying to do with that. You probably should have stopped when you didn't see the "jailbroken" file to check what was wrong and/or try to reinstall the JB at that point, before upgrading the firmware. Did you install the hotfix once you "installed" the JB?

I also don't understand why you went the serial route from the beginning: downgrading from the menu would have been easier, don't you think so?

If you want to JB in the future, you can now block updates (install an empty folder on root named "update.bin.tmp.partial") and wait until there is a JB for the firmware your kindle is currently running.

i dont remember if i wrote here the whole story, so here it goes:
i bought it with 5.8.10.1, which can't be jailbroken as far as i could search the site.
from what i could understand, the best way to proceed was to downgrade. so i went and put in the root the 5.7.4 factory. it updated, but broke the screen, it was all jibberish, garbled, like the resolution was wrong or something. tried all i could find around the forum, nothing worked. went with 5.8.9.1 factory too, screen still garbled. somehow in the process i managed to install the jailbreak, or at least partial, as the pem is still in the right folder. then @knc1 gave me another "hint" to go with a normal image from amazon. which i did, i downloaded latest one, and it did repair the screen problem. but it would've been nice for him to tell me that 5.9.x is another story, for the moment very unbreakable. i would've gone with a 5.8.10 or 11. also now i have this update button greyed out. and i don't think its because there is no update available, because it was normal and i could install any other .bin that i put in the root. now i can't...
i went with the serial because the screen was as it was and nothing i did seemed to make any difference, had also a error code 2 on it lol since the downgrade. forgot to mention that to you.
so a whole lot of adventure. my guess is that 5.8.x has some protection against downgrading. or my pw3 needs some drivers that are not available on earlier versions?
anyway, i'm not flashing (not sure that i could anyway anymore) again a downgrade initial fw, as maybe i wont be able to repair the screen again lol

Did you check the md5sum of your initial 5.7.4 factory bin? Maybe that file was corrupted and that's what caused you trouble?

Sadly I don't remember what version of the firmware my PW3 was running before the JB. 5.8 something... It took a LONG time to downgrade to 5.7.4 factory but then everything went flawlessly, so I don't think it's something to do with 5.8.x.

It's strange that the key is still in the right folder..
What about the hotfix, did you install it?

Really strange, as it seems like most people downgrade with no trouble and the kindle is supposed to check the integrity of the file before downgrading anyway...

Did it work as expected, was the update successful? As you had no screen, are you sure you've been able to correctly start the update?

Quote:
Now, eject & unplug your Kindle, and go to [HOME] -> [MENU] > Settings -> [MENU] > Update Your Kindle. If the update is successful, you're golden. If it fails, it probably means you weren't properly jailbroken before the update, in which case, you're still screwed.
If you upgraded to 5.9.x while not being properly jailbroken, I'm afraid there isn't much you can do other than blocking updates and waiting.

i've run it via the diag in the serial console...
i guess that is the whole issue. ive not used the screen to do anything. i only used the serial console. to export the fat partition and copy there the .bin's and to run them

god knows what that did lol. but i didnt have any choice, i had no screen

The good thing is that you've been able to save your device, even though it would probably have been better to install a 5.8.x so that you could start a JB again. At least your device isn't a brick and can still be used, even though it's not JB (as it seems like it isn't, even if you have that key file somewhere..).

(1) If our signature certificate is in the proper place (same directory as Amazon's two certificates) it is jail broken.
No ifs, ands, ors, or buts - it is jail broken, the certificate is all there is to the jail break.

Once that is done, and as long as you don't do anything stupid, like let Amazon (or yourself) install an update package ...
It remains jail broken.

(2) Which "hotfix"? Link please.

In your situation (no launcher, no search bar command), you MUST use the one attached here:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...68&postcount=4
That one has only one dependency, that our signature certificate is installed.

Put at top of visible USB storage, "safely remove" the USB cable, re-boot.
It does not have any confirmation document, but if you watch the screen very carefully, when it is done installing, it will reboot the device and during the re-start there will be an on-screen message about the 'bridge' code running.

(3) Never, ever, touch the Reset (to factory defaults) menu entry.
That will erase what you just installed in step (2).
But as long as what you just installed in step (2) is undesturbed, it is safe to do an Amazon firmware update.
Step (2) did several things:
It installed the code which auto-reinstalls both itself and the system jail break after an Amazon firmware update.
It installed the ;log mrpi and ;log runme searchbar commands.

(4) Update to the desired version of Amazon firmware - all firmwares are still on the Amazon server, just edit the version number in the URL of the current Amazon update link.

(5) Install MrPI
You only have to un-archive it to the top most, visible level of USB storage - with your un-archive tool options set to create the directory structure in the archive.
Do not let it create an initial directory based on the archive's filename.
What is contained in the archive is exactly what you are suppose to have, nothing more, nothing less.

(6) Put the KUAL booklet installation file in /mrpackages (if you don't have an /mrpackages now - you just did step (5) incorrectly).
Trigger the install with ;log mrpi in the main search bar.

(7) Try KUAL -
If it comes up but only shows a blank screen rather than a list of menu entries, follow the directions at this post (not the entire thread, the post):
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=294765

= = = = =

That is all there is to do other than give away the device, never buy one for yourself, and never bother me here again. Never.
