Size limit in content server downloads?

Hi,

Sorry if this has already been reported but could not find it in the forum.

I'm trying to download books from the calibre content server and it looks like I have hit some sort of size limit. I can download every book under 270Kb but none over that size. I've tried with the Aldiko catalog and the navigator in my XOOM over Wifi and also with the Firefox navigator in the same PC where the calibre server is running. No difference.

The messages from the server, as shown in the preferences dialog in Caliber for these failed downloads are similar to the ones from succesful ones.

I'm on Calibre 0.8.8

Is there a way to increase this limit?

Thanks for any help,

Pepe

There is definitely no such limit built into the Content Sever. I regularly download much bigger items without issues.

However, quite what could be causing your problem is by no means clear.

In case there's any question, I also regularly d/l much bigger ebooks than this. I wonder: are the files arriving, but won't open in the reader, or are they never arriving?

That's what I expected. It doesn't make sense to limit the download size with no obvious way to increase the size limit.

It could be a coincidence that the books I can download are the smallest. Still I don't see any difference between the ones I can download and the ones I can't. Same formats, same disk, similar covers...

Let's see if someone chimes in with a way to debug this problem.

Thanks, anyway, for trying to help.

download your books from a browser on your computer. That will tell if you if the problem is on your device or with the content server

I don't think they are arriving. When using Firefox, if I click on one of the books that I can download, I automatically get the dialog where I can choose to open or save the file. When clicking on one of the ones I can't download, I immediately get a "The connection was reset" page. Like this one, except I get it Spanish, as my Win XP is the Spanish version:

There's no error message in the server, as shown in the Preferences dialog.

Thanks for your help,

Pepe

I have tried Firefox, IE and Chrome in the same coputer where Caliber is installed and I get the same result: I can get the small ones but not the big ones. So the propblem is in the server or somewhere between the server and the clients (network stack, firewall...)...

disable your firewall temporarily (and disconnect from the internet, see that makes a difference)

Disabling the firewall doesn't make any difference.

Disabling the network connection, I cannot reach the content server through 192.168.1.11:8080 anymore. Reaching it through 127.0.0.1:8080, I get the same results. No big books are downloadable.

I have also tried the Caliber in debug mode: started the content server and tried to download two books one of each kind. This is the log I got:

calibre Registro de depuración
calibre 0.8.8
Windows-XP-5.1.2600-SP3
Windows
('Windows', 'XP', '5.1.2600')
Python 2.7.1
Windows: ('XP', '5.1.2600', 'SP3', 'Uniprocessor Free')
Starting up...
Started up in 68.1710000038
Device using plugboard epub content_server None
Device using plugboard epub content_server None

Is there a way to run the content server in some kind of verbose mode so that extensive logging is performed?

Somthing is interfering with the download. I would guess that the most likely culprit is your firewall software.

Have you messed with the network settings, in particular the MTU or TCP window size?

You might want to look at windows event logging to see if some kind of network error is being reported.

I already tried with no firewall and the result was the same.

I tried loading a huge file as cover (600KB) to see whether it would reach Firefox, but Caliber cropped it at load time. The biggest I managed was a 150KB cover file that landed nicely in my Firefox.
