When backing up Kindle 3, I get this:
Does this mean those 62 books weren't backed up. It doesn't even tell me which files. Last edited by Paegan2246; 02-12-2016 at 11:44 AM. |

Did you intend to post an image? Unfortunately it didn't show up.

Yes, it's there now.
This means that 62 books weren't backed up because, as it says, the path length limit would be exceeded. Do your backup to a folder with a short name. |

I backed up to a file name: Kindle3 backup 2-12-2016
Do you know of a way to fix this.. I've had it happen before. |

Yes, but that's still too long, because you have some books with really long titles. The books are stored on the Kindle in the folder called "documents". Use a folder name that's no longer than that. Is your backup folder in the root of the drive, or is in "My Documents" or somewhere similar? Backup to a folder in the root, and use a folder name that's no longer than 9 letters. Windows has a limit of 260 characters for the length of the entire path.

Thanks, I will give this a try. I'm backing up to an external hard drive.

Should be fine with a short folder name. As I say, the total length of the name of the folder(s) plus the length of the filename itself must be no more than 260 characters, or you'll get the error you did get.

I tried your suggestion. Got the file count down to 30 instead of 62. Nothing is very easy (for me at least) when it comes to using Windows.

Is your backup folder in the root directory of your external drive?

yes it is. I even tried it on my C drive..same results 30 un-copied files. Well out of over 2000 books on this Kindle, 30 isn't an awful number

You could also backup to a single file archive (7Zip, winzip, winrar, ....).
If you ever need to restore a file, you can extract it to a root folder without the intervening directories |
