Sony Reader meetup

(I am not sure if this is the right place, please feel free to move it....)

Sarah at Smartbitchestrashybooks posted this 3 days ago:
Quote:

Sony has announcements to make, and in order to do it up in Style (ha) they’ve asked me to co-host a meetup next Wednesday 1 September in New York City.

Where: Sony Style, Madison Avenue at 55th Street, New York City

When: 1 September 2010, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Why: Digital reading! Actual Food! Literal Drinks! And a discussion of what digital books you might like hosted by me, with additional questions asked of you. Because I want to know what you’re reading, yo.

Space is limited so if you want to come, please register online now at EventBrite
ETA: If you register, you are sent a ticket, but I clarified that if you don’t register and drop in, that is ok. Sony just needs an estimate for food and grog-type purposes!
.
I figured it might interest someone here.

Slight problem: Apple is announcing its revised Apple iTV product tomorrow ... so Sony's new e-readers might have a bit of problem getting press. However, for those of us here, I am sure the news will be available.

Anyone planning to be onsite at the New York event?

iTV is nothing special and neither is an iPhone 4 based iPod Touch.

I agree. I don't think Apple-a-day will make any difference to the Sony announcements. If anything, Sony may get a little more attention than they would have because folks will stumble onto the Sony info in the business section while looking for the Apple info.

That may be so but Apple has successfully marketed theemselves as having the "coolest" gadgets and being the "coolest" company. So as have been observed in the past ANYTHING they do gets HUGE press coverage. Engadget is already reminding people that Apple has an event tmr, they've even posted the times their liveblog will be available for the different timezones.

So while Apple may not really be introducing any new groundbreaking technology I'm sure their event will get a lot more coverage than Sony's own. Apple is if anything a textbook example of excellent marketing (product design etc) over the years.

I wish we would have another southeastern US mertup. Our only one was nearly 2 ys ago, and it was a blast. There are photos here at MR from our picnic at a state park. We had folks from MS, AL, and GA.

I just can't organize another one myself anytime soon. We will be out of the country for Sept-Oct, but if anyone were to plan a SE meetup for afterward, we would love tp come to it.

It seems that Sony will now go completely with touchscreens now that they are able to remove the extra layer with all the new technology. I think it's great!
