Nesbit, Edith: Oddments (Short Story Collection). v1. 08 Nov 2015

Selected short stories by Edith Nesbit (1858–1924)

Contents first published 1884 ~ 1918. The text of this book is in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA.

-----------
Edith Nesbit Bland, English author and poet, published approximately 40 books for children under the name of E. Nesbit. Her innovative body of work influenced many subsequent fantasy writers. Nesbit’s reputation rests almost exclusively on her work for children, but she also wrote for adults. In addition to about a dozen novels for adults, she published many short stories (often under the name E. Bland).

* * * *

The word “oddments” can be defined as “remnants,” but also as “rarities.” The twenty-five stories presented here were found in various magazine archives. Some were published in Nesbit’s collections Something Wrong (1893), Thirteen Ways Home (1901), and To the Adventurous (1923); those collections are not currently available in digital form – indeed, they are exceedingly rare even on paper.

Here you will encounter fairy-tale wonder, melancholy tragedy, farcical comedy, sugar-sweet romance, tart social commentary. Some of these tales may not show the author at her very best, but even mediocre Nesbit is garnished with nuggets of gold.

-------------
Texts were obtained from magazine archives found at archive.org and hathitrust.org.
Embedded fonts for titling and drop-caps. Punctuation, diacritics, and italics have been formatted; OCR errors corrected, some spelling and punctuation modernized and standardized. Chapter heads are cross-linked to in-line Table of Contents. Stories are arranged chronologically by publication date, and annotated with their source.

--------------
This is my own compilation. There are even more short stories out there *somewhere* --- many magazine archives are missing from my go-to links. If anyone has other good magazine sources, give me a shout. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy these.
