James Fenimore Cooper hat nicht nur Indianer- und Siedler-Romane geschrieben, sondern auch See-Geschichten; eine von ihnen ist "Der Lootse. Ein Seegemälde" (1824); die anonyme Übersetzung von *r erschien in demselben Jahr wie das Original, in drei Bänden mit insges. knapp 800 Seiten.
