Cool Thrillers that make you think?

Hi everybody.

I really enjoy reading thrillers that have a bit more to them. I want to call them 'intelligent thrillers' but that sounds so pompous , so how about 'thrillers that make you think'?

For instance, I've just finished reading 'The Ghost' by Robert Harris and John Le Carre's 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' (again).

Has anybody got any recommendations?

You might like Robert Harris' Enigma.
Patricia Highsmith is good too.

i'm not a big thriller fan but Robert Harris' Fatherland and Archangel were awesome books.

Here's my tuppence worth......

Peter Robinson, ian Banks, the rest of LeCarre, the whole "Bosche" series, and - of course - the incomparable James Lee Burke.

Oh, and, for the "period" touch, search for this thread :-

"Dr Thorndyke" now complete

for Harry's excellent Thorndyke canon, a bit about them, and downloads, from the MobileRead Library.
They'll make you think all right .... much more rewarding than Holmes, I reckon.

All thrillers make me think ... usually: "Well, that would never happen." or "Gimme a break."

I'm thinking of Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon" because of the techno-political topics.

Come to think of it, the "Odd.." series by Koontz could just be called thrillers - well worth reading, anyway, I consider them his best output by far.

Lawrence Sanders wrote very interesting books. The tomorrow file is the most stimulating and ahead of its time.

Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. I think it's considered YA but I didn't know that when I read it (or probably wouldn't have). Not especially thrilling, but certainly thought provoking in a War Games kind of way.

Turing Evolved, by David Kitson. Not sure if it qualifies as a thriller, but very thought provoking, in the way The Matrix and Blade Runner were (or tried to be).

Yes this is a great read, it restored my interest in science fiction which had waned a lot over the last few years.
