I've been collecting paper books since the mid 70's. More than a few are getting pretty dark for every day reading. The hardback books are in much better shape. There is a reason they called paperback books pulps.

If you want to get technical about it, pulps referred to pulp magazines (which were printed on wood pulp paper) and then later to the type of fiction they contained. I don't think paperbacks in and of themselves are referred to as pulps.
