It might be a last resort for people who can't buy directly from Amazon.
I had to buy my Oasis from a Danish reseller. This reseller lives near the border to Germany and probably buys directly from Amazon.de.

It will of course make the device more expensive.

If you make too many complaints / returns, Amazon can disable ALL of your account. There is no document outlining how many is too many, nor any appeal mechanism. Tough if you didn't back up your Cloud Content or you have much unexpired subscription on Prime or Audible etc.
All gone.
So there is a market for Amazon goods. The Services can't be resold. Amazon will insist that the ebooks, audiobooks etc are services.

Amazon isn't meant to be a "try and see if you like it" operation. I've been buying on Amazon for years, and have returned things when they didn't work, or were not advertised correctly. The average consumer isn't going to have the issue you mentioned.

Those who try to work the system, or return too many purchases may end up with a closed account. But Amazon isn't alone or unique in having a return limit. Brick & mortar stores have done this for many years.

The times I've read about this, those customers did not lose their digital content. They just couldn't buy any more.

See Guardian (UK newspaper) exposé.
They are ignoring EU consumer laws.
You don't know what the limit is.
They do block everything.
You can be unlucky with a courier or product or supplier using Amazon.
Also if you are buying lots and a customer a long time, the returns will build up.

You have alternatives if one local chain is awkward. Also legal recourse such as the very cheap small claims court. There is no recourse with Amazon and they aim to be a monopoly.

Are you saying you can't take Amazon to small claims court?

Onyx has promised to look into the matter to ensure that customers are fully aware of where their devices are shipping from and that they might therefore incur additional costs. But then they unlisted the thread where the issue had been raised so that it is now only available via direct link so who knows what will happen.

Onyx has listed the thread again.

Hopefully potential customers will be able to get a clearer picture of how Good e-Reader operates.

I don't have a problem with Amazon having a limit on returns. I don't even really care that they don't tell you what the limit is. I do have a problem with having one's account be closed as the FIRST sign that there is an issue.

A warning or two is in order.

I think the readers they sell are the units they review. A lot of the more obscure (in North America) readers they review, they purchase themselves. I remember them mentioning that.

I have no problem with them selling those. Why they would charge more is a good question though.
