Use ADB. Even without root you should be able to see if it's mounted and see if you can see the files. The SD card normally has to be vfat-ish to mount, although you can change the fstab to allow ext4, ntfs or whatever.

Ah, yes, thanks. I found out about ADB and poked around but could not immediately see a way to go to the SD card.

Before the Palma2, I was using a Boyue Ares book for about 5 years, this was based on a much older Android. With that device, I could simply within KOReader set the incoming folder to a folder on the SD card and that was fine. With the new device, it seems not possible to browse there using the file browser (probably the one provided by the system), that is called when asking to set the inbox.

So what I did was the following:
- Connect to the device from laptop. Here I can see the card, but copying is so painfully slow that I could not stand it. So I did only create the folders I needed to hold the book libraries on the device.

- I then went to the koreader/settings.reader.lua and opened it on the laptop with a text editor, manually changed the location of the setting "inbox_dir" to the folder on the card and saved the file.

- I disconnected and opened KOReader on the Palma2. Now I could connect to Calibre on the laptop over WIFI and copy all I needed to the SD card. -- This might have been possible with ADB or other methods as well, but the advantage here is that it is fast, no cable needed during the transfer and the metadata on the device are arranged in a way KOReader can use it.

So with this method, I am now happy with the setup and do not need to root.

My preference is USB over WiFi. I sync from my desktop to portable devices using my adbsync.exe which leverages ADB. That way everything is on everything.
