It's the way ePub 3 changed some things (poorly) in ePub 3 that makes ePub 3 a PITA.

And what changes in particular do you have problems with?

Everything.
It's like learning python 2.6, only to figure out last year python 3.0 came out, and 25% of commands have changed name!

IMHO, it's not as bad as you make it out to be. I started out writing (very simple) Python 2.7 Sigil plugins and found out that making them Python 3.4 compatible usually only required adding a couple of conditional import statements (and parens for print statements).
The same goes for ePub3 books. The ePub3 standard supports creating ePub2-compatible ePub3 books, and if you already have a valid ePub2 book, all you have to do is export it with KevinH's epub3 Sigil output plugin.

Gravedigging an old thread, lol,
Haven't been in here for a while.
I see no reason why to get off of the old HTML0 standard.
I mean, almost anything HTML0 can do, an ereader can do.
It should be good enough for 95-99% of writing books.
I absolutely love HTML0!
