Trollope, Anthony: The Way We Live Now, v1, 12 Oct 2007.

Trollope, Anthony: The Way We Live Now, v1, 12 Oct 2007.

‘The Way We Live Now’ was first published in 1875.

My favourite Trollope novel. This is not part of a series. It explores several themes: money and speculation in the second half of the nineteenth century – its treament reminds me of the Thatcherite entrepeneurs of the 1980s. The novels also questions what it is like to be a Jew in a Gentile society (and, to a lesser extent, a Catholic in an Anglican one).
One of the central character, the speculator, Melmotte, may well remind Britons of Robert Maxwell and Americans of Ivan Boesky. This is a world where everything is commodified; even marriage and literature.

Thanks for uploading this- curious about it, and since I've never read any Trollope, I'm curious in which way it reminds me of the contemporary novel Bonfire of the Vanities.

A useless fact to amaze your friends with: did you know that Anthony Trollope invented the postbox during his lengthy career working for the post office? Prior to that time, post was collected directly from peoples' houses - Trollope came up with the idea of having postboxes in the street for anyone to put their post into.

Trollope was responsible for the introduction of the first postboxes in Britain, but I don't think he invented them.
