(Le Réquistionnaire) Translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley A short story of about 5,500 words, set in a Normandy town in 1793. A former aristocrat is expecting a secret visit from her son, an émigré. However, the townspeople are suspicious because of the preparations she is making. Meanwhile, a lonely figure, with military conscript’s papers, is making his way to the town… I have reformatted and restored accents and italics.
