old thread, but still relevant topic, thought id share my experience

have imported an amazon topaz book into calibre. Only found out after trying to open it directly with Calibre ereader - the extension itself only shows .azw

it imported as an htmlz (thanks user_none) and from there converted to epub without issue. Calibre ereader can open both epub and htmlz versions, but the latter took longer than usual, and theres no real issues editing the epub.

Its not an exact replica, but the only problems have noticed are the following

- italics rules have been stripped
- superscript rules have been stripped (plus sometimes also disappears the footnote numbers too)
- some quotations " are converted to 11
- some images are formatted as svg (Calibre ereader cant view those in its popup but they show up fine otherwise, and can be converted to standard formats with third party software or service)
- and toc needs to be redone

Overall, hoped to find a fix for those issues, but feel sortof relieved now, that if the conversions are always imperfect, those issues arent too hard to fix

AZW to HTMLZ removed ALL diacritic marks!

The text I was de-DRMing (for backup purposes) from an AZW resulted in an HTMLZ file. The book is in Spanish. In the conversion/stripping process it also stripped the Spanis text of all diacritical marks! (e.g. ñ became n, all the words with an ´ mark, the mark disappeared. Any way to prevent this?

The eBook you bought is a Topaz format eBook. When you import it into your Calibre library, it gets converted to htmlz.

DUH! This I know. That was not my question. The conversion process stripped my Spanish text of all diacritical marks. I’m looking to prevent/correct this. I saw someone mentioned a free-standing converter that I might use, rather than Calibre plugins. What is it called? Where can int

Where did you see this, and why not ask the someone there?

Maybe this can help ==>> Guide for converting Kindle Topaz (xhtml with svg).

Otherwise search the web for 'convert topaz book'.

It could be that the text behind the images is as you see without the diacritical marks.
