I may have read Murder Must Advertise, as the blurb seems familiar. Therefore I'll follow the advice to start with Clouds of Witness and skip Whose Body?

Fortunately my libraries seem to have many with no wait.

I agree that you shouldn't start with that, as there are all sorts of issues. But if you fall for the series, eventually you'd want to read it. And by that time, you're hooked.

It improved enough. Not enough to recommend to anyone else, but I'm interested enough to read the next. As with many series, the first is (AFAIR) standalone, but the next volumes form one big story.

Currently reading Raza Mir's "Murder at the Mushaira" starring MIRZA GHALIB as a detective! So far, a fun mix of history, mystery and Urdu poetry (as the title suggests). I smiled at seeing my Dad's birthplace dissed, too:

"The problem as always is Meerut. Things are crazy there"

• Hog Meat and Hoecake: Food Supply in the Old South by Sam Bowers Hilliard. You wouldn't read this for the prose, but the substance is interesting.
• Why Homer Matters by Adam Nicolson. Interesting insights. I'm not quite swept away, but it's enhancing my appreciation.

Finished these. Now reading:

• Nine Times Nine by Anthony Boucher. A mystery I'd never heard of, set in 1940 Los Angeles with a nun as the detective. Great fun so far.
• The Cultural Life of the American Colonies by Louis B. Wright. I'm going to stick with this for now, but it's pretty dated.

Can't resist one more Sayers comment. Even given the issues with Whose Body?, some of which were of its time and some were Sayers' finding her feet, it's still much better than Five Red Herrings!

This is a book about people (aliens) and relationships with a small amount of action (excitement) added. This took me a long time to finish. Apparently, I need more action (excitement) and less feelings (emotions) to keep my interest. Writing was good. Comical at times. Still won't continue the series. Rated C- [3 stars].

Next, another Prime Reading freebie, Warriorborn by Jim Butcher, a stand-alone novella in his Cinder Spires series.

I was singularly unimpressed by Psalm for the Wild-Built (audiobook version) and wonder about the adulation it receives. I doubt I'll read more Becky Chambers.

I'm not a Jim Butcher fan either, having slogged through about two of his Dresden Files books.

Try Make It So: Leadership Lessons From Star Trek: The Next Generation by Wess Roberts, Ph.D and Bill Ross

It is written as if Jean-Luc Picard was writing a book on leadership due to his experiences as Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation from his arrival on the ship until Star Trek: Generations. Each chapter in the book illustrates a principle of leadership using a episode of Star Trek: TNG and it is written from the point of view of Picard as Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

I've read it a few times and it is an excellent read. You don't have to be a fan of Star Trek to enjoy the book.

Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series I felt was better. Gruesome. Original. Well-plotted.
