In der Wüste findet Olaf Karl Abelsen die bewusstlose Lizzie Neworld. Zusammen mit dem Gelehrten Reginald Forrester und dem Somali Afra machen sie sich von Nubien auf nach Britisch-Ostafrika (dem heutigen Kenia) um Lizzie zu ihren Verwandten zu bringen. Unterwegs geraten sie in einen Hinterhalt der Anhänger des verrückten Mullahs. Durch einen Zufall retten sie Gabara, den Häuptling der Guasasso-Gallas und werden von ihm aufgenommen.
