Don't worry, even with the smiley someone is likely to get upset . Glad to see you can take a ribbing.

1920 x 1200 is a given spec by the manufacturer -> sqrt((1920 x 1920) + (1200 * 1200)) -> 2264 pixels for the diagonal. (Pythagoras.) 10.5 inch for the diagonal is a given spec by the manufacturer. 2264 px / 10.5 inch = 215.6 px/inch. And yes, I calculated the 216 px/inch to be able to get the width/height of the display area in inches. Then I calculated the diagonal when taking half the width but keeping the height (as it is with two pages in landscape). This wouldn't work well with non-square pixels. It can be done, but some adjustment factor is needed because one pixel in width, will not be the same as one pixel in height. I don't take those into account, because for all intents and purposes, non-square pixels aren't used in normal every day devices any more. (As far as I know.) I have, however, seen posts in this thread and other past threads by people who insinuate that those who don't like to read on LCD haven't been bright enough to adjust the brightness setting. |

But what really riled me in this thread was the "E Ink fanboy" reference. The insinuation, of course, is that those who prefer eInk Readers do so out of "blind loyalty" or stubbornness, or are Luddites ... or whatever — and that our "claims" as to why we prefer eInk are just "made up" to cover up our innate fanboy-ism. I'm over it now ... I think. |

Phone or not, but I just notice I'm reading more, and, for some reason, I feel like I *want to read*, something which I haven't had for quite a long time. Quite often, I just couldn't be bothered with the e-reader, because it ended up in a place where I wasn't because I forgot to, or didn't bring it with me. (Like, forgetting it at home on my desk, or not bringing it to lunch when I was early or late and the only one lunching at work).
So I lost some reading time here, some there, in the end didn't even bother... but I *ALWAYS* have my phone in my pocket, and thus when given half a chance when I'm alone, I'll read. And with regards to paper books... when I see my girlfriend jack-assing around with A5-sized or larger books of 500-1000 pages thick, trying to put them into a bag that's always too small and playing Tetris with the contents to get the m***r to fit in there, I get all nervous and antsy. Like... There are better ways to carry letters with you, nowadays. Last edited by Katsunami; 09-22-2018 at 04:47 PM. |

She will actually buy paper versions of books I already have in my e-book library, even though she's always green with envy about said library. *I upload 10 books to my e-reader/phone... she goes grumpy face...* The irony is, she has an e-reader of her own, but it's "somewhere" in her parent's house. It's probably shelved among the paper books, with a broken battery as it hasn't been used for years. I don't mind if she or anyone else reads on paper only, but you can't have 10 books with you at all times, nor can you have 5000 books in your library (in normal home), if you do. And yes, I'm a book lover. I buy very specific books as paper books: illustrated editions of favorite works, and illustrated historical/encyclopedic books/reference books, mainly. (Or books that I really want, and that don't exist as e-books.) These books add something to the reading experience which an e-reader, phone, or tablet can't provide. |

My kids are the same way. They see me reading on an ereader every day and expanding my ereader collection (thanks to shopgoodwill). I point out that they are running out of space for all of their physical books in their rooms, they can can carry hundred of books on an ereader, many books they like are available free, etc. Yet, when I offer them one of my old ereaders to read ebooks they tell me they prefer to read "the old fashioned way."

That's another point... My GF buys classics as paper books. As I have every classic she knows of, and probably in multiple versions and editions to choose from (Delphi, Feedbooks, etc), I consider it a waste of (her own) money.

I just bought some paperbacks on eBay, a trilogy I read in the 80s (Susan Dexter books). They were available as eBooks (now self-published, originally published by Del Rey). The reason I chose the old paperbacks over the new eBooks is because the amateur covers on the self-published eBooks were just hideously ugly. I know that's shallow, but the covers really were ugly. Besides, I think it also said "edited and enlarged," or something to that effect. I just wanted the same stories I read 40-some years ago, not something different with the same title. (I probably won't even like them any more.)

Actually I can't remember having ever read them. So thanks for the tip. No paper books for me, I'm afraid. I'll just change the covers in Calibre. |
