Open Source bei Readern ein Vorteil?
Bald kommt ja der txtr raus und dessen Plattform beruht ja auf Linux, ist also Open Source. Meiner Meinung nach ein großer Vorteil. Wie seht Ihr dass? Gibt es bereits Reader deren Betriebsystem Open Source ist? Wenn ja ist dort eine Entwicklungscommunity entstanden?

Pocketbook OS (Pocketbook 301+, Pocketbook 360 ) ist Open Source. Basiert auf Linux 2.6.
Es gibt schon eine Entwicklungscommunity, allerdings zurzeit russisch sprechende.

Das Pocketbock 360 wird auch immer interessanter. Wenn es verstärkt in anderen Ländern vertrieben wird, bilden sich dort sicher auch anderssprachige Enwicklungscommunitys.

Auch die Cybooks bauen ja eigentlich auf Open Source mit Linux auf. Nur hat man scheint's bei Bookeen so seine Probleme damit, alle Quellen offen zu legen oder sich konsequent an die GNU-Vorgaben zu halten.

Pocketbook war gerade bei der IFA-2009 in Berlin ausgestellt. Teilname an der Frankfurter Buchmesse ist nicht geplant.

Außerdem bis zu Frankfurter Buchmesse wird Pocketbook 302 wahrscheinlich noch nicht fertig.

Zurzeit wird einen Verkaufsstart von Pocketbook in Deutschland vorbereitet, außerdem ist die Interesse aus Spanien, Schweiz und Frenkreich sehr groß, möglicherweise kommt Pocketbook zeitnah auch dort auf dem Markt.

Leider sind nur Teile davon - Open Source. Und wegen der Tivoisierung ist jegliche Modifikation der Firmware unmöglich.

Es gibt aber ein SDK und man kann selbstgebastelte Applikationen von SD Karte laufen lassen.

Für die meisten Benutzer reicht es aber?

Außerdem ist Pocketbook sehr interessiert, alle nützliche Applikationen auch in die Firmware zu integrieren.

Wirklichen Nutzen davon haben nur Programmierer, die auch bereit sind, den Code entsprechend abzuändern und neue Features einzubauen oder Fehler zu beheben.

Für 08/15-User wie mich ist das höchste eine positive Geste des Herstellers gegenüber der Community. Wirklich haben tue ich nichts davon.

Die Frage bleibt ja trotzdem: Wer macht das bzw. hat das schon einmal gemacht? Ein Vorteil, den niemand effektiv nutzt, ist de facto kein Vorteil.

Für den normalen User ist wichtig, wie einfach das Gerät zu bedienen ist, wie gut das Display ist und wie lange der Akku hält. Nicht, ob es irgendeinen offenen Standard hat. Oder ein frei zugängliches SDK.

Der Vorteil des 08/15*-Users liegt darin, dass die Community ihre Verbesserungen / Applikationen für alle verfügbar macht.
So geschehen bei Homebrew-Communities für diverse Spielkonsolen, Handys, ..., bis hin zu Routern.

* Schon seltsam, was alles nach einem Gewehr benannt wird...

Ein solches Gerät, das ich aktuell nutze, ist mein Router, ein Linksys WRT-54GL, für den es mehrere alternative Firmwares gibt. Die von mir eingesetzte Firmware Tomato hat zum Beispiel ein um längen besseres QoS and Support für VoIP als die Originalfirmware.

Ich weiß von Homebrew-Software auf Sony PSP, Playstation 2, Nintendo DS, Wii, Open-WRT-fähigen Routern, allen Java- und Symbian-Handys, iPhone, ... Die Liste ist schier endlos.
Selbst für die meisten aktuellen MP3-Player (seit dem 1. iPod) gibt es eine alternative (offene) Firmware mit Namen RockBox.

Einige Community-Homebrews (allen voran für PSP) hab ich selbst verwendet, obwohl ich nicht selbst programmieren kann (abgesehen von SPSen und Mikrocontrollern.) Und genau das ist der Nutzen für den Enduser.
