Thomas Mann: Der Tod in Venedig (1912)

Die Novelle, die Thomas Mann wie ein klassisches Drama in fünf Abschnitte gegliedert hat, handelt von Gustav von Aschenbach.

Aschenbach ist 50, lebt in München und befindet sich auf der Höhe seines öffentlichen Ruhms. Von plötzlichem Fernweh erfasst bricht er nach Venedig auf, wo der sonst so disziplinierte und korrekte Mann in sinnliche Zuneigung zu einem jungen Polen namens Tadzio entflammt. Venedig wird von Cholerafällen heimgesucht und auch Tadzio infiziert sich.
