mobi nomenclature

Mobipocket Creator generates .prc files and Calibre generates .mobi files; both readable by Mobipocket Reader. Anyone know the difference between those two file types?

They're for all practical purposes the same. As I understand it, PRC (Palm Resource Container) is the old, and rather more general description (as it is also used for other files using the Palm container format), while MOBI (Mobipocket) is newer and specific to Mobipocket books.

Absolutely right. A PRC file can contain absolutely any type of data - it's just a "container". A Mobipocket book is one possibility for the type of data that can be contained within such a file.

If you have a Mobipocket book, it doesn't matter whether it has a ".prc" or a ".mobi" file extension.

prc vs. mobi distinction - REPLY

Oops! Sorry for going black-screen like that. My hard drive crashed before I could reply. Hurray for Seagate; for their ISO format diagnostic and repair software.

Anyway, more to the point, thanks greatly for taking the time to explain.
