Amazon is (possibly) working on a colour e-reader

It's rumoured that Amazon is working on an e-reader will have a colour screen. Up until now, their e-readers have had black and white screens only.

The technology comes from Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, created by Liquavista, so says GoodEReader (*). That company, which is a spin-off from Philips, was sold to Amazon in 2013.

According to GoodEReader, the new device will have an 8 inch screen, while all current models have a 6 six inch screen only.

It's not clear what technology will be used exactly, but on its site, LiquaVista shows a technology called 'electro wetting.' This is a screen technology that uses small droplets, which will be deformed by putting current through them. The light hitting those droplets can have different colours because of this.

According to Liquavista, changes will only take miliseconds, which will make it possible to create an e-reader with a much higher refresh frequency as compared to current models. It might even be possible to play a video on a Kindle.

The electro wetting technology has been in development for a very long time. In 2003, the technology was mentioned on the cover of the scientific magazine Nature, but it proved difficult to actually produce colour screens using this technology.

At this time, Amazon's Kindles are using screens made by the American company E-Ink, which has also shown prototypes of colour e-ink screens several times before. Those have never been used for e-readers, however.

They very possibly are working on it. That's a given really. If they can make it work they know they will have a breakthrough device, let's hope they get the lighting right

I don't care about covers on a small-screened color ebook reader, because I can't imagine staring at the cover for hours and hours and getting any pleasure out of it. I acknowledge that some people enjoy staring at covers for a very lengthy amount of time, so all power to those types of individuals who enjoy that activity!

An 8" high resolution color screen would be for more than book covers. Color PDFs including those made from magazines, Comics of many kinds, cookbooks, instructional material where the color of the subject matter is significant, ect ...

Field Guides and FirstAid Manuals that need to be readable in bright sunlight. (What do those colors on that snake mean again?)
