Here's my decor-friendly organizing solution for paperbacks that avoids having to store them backwards.

Buy photo boxes--they usually they cost $2 or so at a crafts store like Michael's and come in a wide variety of patterns and colors. Mass-market paperbacks fit inside perfectly with spines up--usually 15 or so to a box. The boxes have a space for a label, so you can easily categorize the contents. You can stack the boxes two high on a shelf. In this way, you can get about 30 paperbacks or more in the space that otherwise accommodates only maybe 10 and keep them neat, easily accessible, and color-coordinated.

What would you think if someone stored your book with the spine towards the wall?

Authors’ point of view: I wouldn’t really care. Paint them, annotate them, burn them for all I care. You bought it, so do with it what you like.

Personal point-of-view: My heartrate is going 180 looking at it. But I’m the guy who starts sorting other people’s book and DVD racks when I see it not being alphabetically or topically ordered, see there’s that.

On a personal note: you have an open invitation to visit me at anytime.
Oh wait, you might not want to do that. You could wind up singing Hotel California.

Well, I'd started humming "There's No Way Out of Here" (as sung by David Gilmour, lyrics by Ken Baker) ... but close enough. It continues, "when you come in, you're in for good."

One of the joys of bookcases is that your books are on display and someone can say, "Oh, you read that too? What did you think?". And when it comes to decor I'm a fan of eclectic i.e. if the individual items are interesting enough in their own right then they don't need to match per se.

Of course I can't point fingers. I am guilty of a different sin - I have bookcases with books shelved two deep!

What do you mean by "photo boxes"? Can you give a link to an example of one?

They're just cardboard boxes with lids. Here's one at Amazon UK, though the price is ridiculous. In the U.S., crafts stores always have them; I think office supply stores might have them as well.
