Version 2.1.0 - New Series Scrubber/Consolidator/Renamer

Version 2.1.0 - 26 October 2014 New Series Scrubber/Consolidator/Renamer and Revised Instructions.

Version 2.0.0 brought you a powerful and flexible Tag Scrubber. Now, Version 2.1.0 brings a powerful yet very easy to use Series Scrubber/Consolidator/Renamer. Refer to the instructions. It has a "what-if" mode so you can see what it would do if you were to run it in the "actual update" mode. Of course, you must have finished scrubbing at the Book Level before it makes a lot of sense to run the Series Scrubber/Consolidator/Renamer, since Book Level Scrubbing creates Work Series whenever it extracts a Series Name (and often its Series Index Number) from the Author or Title fields.

Remember to always run the "Update Version" job after upgrading to a new version of Quarantine And Scrub. This version brings one new SQLite table and 6 new SQLite views to make the Series Scrubber function, so those objects must be created before the Series Scrubber will work.

New Users (only): you must also download the .jar file that is really a .zip file attached to the OP, and follow the instructions. This is an add-on, not a simple plugin. The plugin icons will not become clickable until it is pointed to the correct Calibre Library, which is "QuarantineAndScrub".

Version 2.3.0 - 29 October 2014 New Tag Propagator by Series

The newest version of Q&S has been released: Version 2.3.0 - 29 October 2014 New Tag Propagator by Series.

The theory is that the tags for all books in the identical series should reasonably have the same tags. The new Tag Propagator by Series does that.

The Tag Propagator by Series should only be run AFTER the book has a green status of "book_ok" achieved after Booklevel Scrubbing has completed, and also after the Series Consolidator has been run to rename/consolidate Work Series names.

A summary of the latest releases:

Version 2.3.0 - 29 October 2014 New Tag Propagator by Series; and Revised Instructions.

Version 2.2.0 - 28 October 2014 Enhancements to Series Consolidator/Renamer

Version 2.1.2 - 28 October 2014 Enhanced Scrubbing Rules for Series derivation from Title

Version 2.1.1 - 27 October 2014 Tag Scrubber now removes Author, Title and Series found in Tags; New Scrubbing Rules; and Revised Instructions.

Version 2.1.0 - 26 October 2014 New Series Scrubber/Consolidator/Renamer and Revised Instructions.

Version 2.0.0 - 24 October 2014 New User-Maintained (via a GUI) "Tag Rules Table" that can use regex to scrub (change or delete) tags. GUI is by http://sqlitebrowser.org/ that is designed for frequent end-user table maintenance. Part of the New Tag Scrubber.

Always run the "After Upgrade" job first thing so the new and revised (since version 1.0.0) SQLite database objects can be created or changed.

New Version: Version 2.5.0 - 6 November 2014

New Version: Version 2.5.0 - 6 November 2014 New Scrubbing Option: Rename Work Series Name to Web Series Name [Previously Verified Fiction Series Only]; Revised Instructions; and bug fixes.

This releases adds the next logical step that follows: Version 2.4.0 - 4 November 2014 New Miscellaneous Scrubbing Option: Verify Work Series Index Using Web Lookup.

This release adds one new table and two new views, so be sure to immediately run the "Upgrade Version" job on the menu after installing release 2.5.0 (or any other release of Q&S).

This new functionality is in addition to the Series Renamer / Consolidator, which will pick the "best" Work Series name of the many you might have in the Q&S Library, and rename the related others to that best one. This consolidates both Fiction and Nonfiction series.

However, the "best" Fiction Work Series name from above may not be identical to what the Web Series name is, so this new functionality in Version 2.5.0 (purely as an option) gives you the ability to rename your Fiction Work Series names to what the Web Series name is according to the web source, which is a fiction series database.

I have found via empirical evidence in my various libraries that running the "Series Renamer / Consolidator" prior to running the "Rename Work Series Name to Web Series Name" often yields better results in the latter because the former smooths out the rough edges around the original Work Series name prior to any renaming by anything. Those rough edges prevent a hit on the web source database.

The User Instructions have been updated to reflect both the new functionality and the proper execution sequence of everything in this add-on, including new validations regarding the execution of Author-Level Scrubbing in the sequence of events with the goal of maximizing the quality of the end-result (i.e., a clean ebook with the key metadata in its proper place and properly named).

As always, new users (only) must also download the .jar (really .zip) file from the original post and follow the user instructions as to what to do with it.

New Version 2.6.0 Quarantine & Scrub [Add-on/GUI Plug-in]

Version 2.6.0 -12 November 2014 Expanded Functionality for Renaming Work Series/Titles/Indexes to Web Source Names/Values; Revised User Instructions.

Great new functionality.

As always, immediately run the "After Version Upgrade" job on the menu so several new SQLite objects will be created before you try to use them.

User Instructions have been expanded to include all of the new functionality in the sequential steps to follow in converting unclean/misplaced/malformed/non-standard metadata into clean metadata ready for moving to your Pristine Library in Calibre.

Version 2.7.0 -13 November 2014 New Feature: "Easy-Add Tags to Purge"

Version 2.7.0 -13 November 2014 New Feature: "Easy-Add Tags to Purge" to the Tag Rules Table; Revised User Instructions.

The new "Easy-Add Tags to Purge" to the Tag Rules Table functionality closes the circle with the previously released Tag Rules Table with User Maintained regular expressions and simple matches to either change or delete Work Tags during Tag Scrubbing at both the Book Level and the standalone Tag Scrubber Job for all books.

This new functionality finds all "real" Tags that do NOT have a rule in the Tag Rules table (nor are used as a NewTag when changing and Old Tag to a New Tag), and loads them into a typical Calibre-style list editor. Instead of editing them (that is not what this is for), you simply select with your mouse the Tag or Tags that you want to forever vanish from the current and any future books in the Q&S library. The new functionality creates a regular expression rule (so upper or lower or mixed cases do not matter) for the selected Tags, and adds that rule along with a PurgeTag indicator of True. Just select, click the single icon, and click "okay" to exit the dialog. Easy as pie.

No more excuses for (tens of) thousands of useless, meaningless and even annoying Tags.

Of course you can still maintain the Tag Rules table by hand via the end-user friendly (and free) sqlitebrowser.org tool discussed in the Q&S User Instructions. That would still be needed to change Tags to another Tag (e.g. the regular expression that changes the myriad forms of "Science Fiction" to a single Tag value, such as Fiction:Science or Science Fiction or whatever you wish for your personal Library; it is your Tag Rules Table...).

Version 2.8.0 - New "Easy-Add Tags-to-NEWTAG Mappings" to Tag Rules Table feature

New Version 2.8.0 brings you the New "Easy-Add Tags-to-NEWTAG Mappings" to Tag Rules Table feature. This is the companion to Version 2.7.0's "Easy-Add Tags to Purge" to the Tag Rules Table functionality.

Be sure to run the "After Version Upgrade" job on the menu first thing, since this new version adds a new table and a new view.

Enjoy your new free time that Q&S has provided you. I wish I had had this add-on/plug-in starting a few years ago. Since then, I have spent literally a work-year in total hours cleaning my library of trashed out metadata in general, but tags in particular. No longer. I now have Q&S, which I actually wrote for myself, but are glad to share with others who have a little (or a lot?) of OCD when it comes to their valuable Calibre library.

My 'Derive Genres' plug-in was essentially developed for the same reason. I figured if I could derive a good genre for a book using Boolean tag rules, I could then delete all of its tags (the fastest way to clean tags that I know). Now, with Q&S, I can still derive good genres but yet have good tags too.

Version 2.9.0 - New User-Maintained "Title Rules Table" with Regular Expressions

Version 2.9.0 - New User-Maintained "Title Rules Table" that uses regular expressions to change/delete words in titles; Revised User Instructions.

This release brings you the ability to use Regular Expressions to change any word in any Work Title as you wish. 62 seed entries in table _title_rules already will capitalize common acronyms (e.g. fbi, nsa, cia, wtc, asap, rfid, laser, radar, scuba, etc.), as well as Roman Numerals (i, ii, iii, iv, v, vi, vii, viii, ix, x). It also changes two profane words to their more socially acceptable versions: F**K and S**T.

Using the identical GUI-based tool that you already use for Tag Rules, you can modify this table as you wish. It is now yours.

The User Instructions have had 8 new pages added to explain this new functionality. Click the "Read Q&S Instructions" icon on the Q&S Menu to view it.

As always, you must immediately run the "Upgrade Version" job on the Q&S menu to add new SQLite objects. Version 2.9.0 has a single new object, table _title_rules.

Be sure to read the revised User Instructions.

Remember that Q&S already uses an advanced English-specific titlecasing function, and also already uses a function that inserts spaces into camelback strings (e.g. TheManAteAnApple). So, if you use Q&S, you will already have a Work Title that has been scrubbed clean of Authors, Series and Series Indexes embedded within it, and is already properly capitalized with few exceptions (mainly acronyms). The new Title Rules feature handles those few exceptions.

n.b. New users (only), please read the original post to download the special .jar (.zip) file required to use Q&S.

Version 2.9.3 -19 November 2014 Enhancements to Easy-Add Work Tags to NEWTAG Mappings

Version 2.9.3 -19 November 2014 Enhancements to Easy-Add Work Tags to NEWTAG Mappings to Tag Rules Table

This new feature will get into the User Instructions, but might be overlooked for those of you who don't read it for changes in every new version.

The Enhancement is that the "Easy-Add Work Tags to NEWTAG Mappings to Tag Rules Table" GUI will now let you add a DELETE rule within the guise of a "from Work Tag" to "to Work Tag" framework.

What you do is to specify the "NEWTAG" for the Work Tag to be either "DELETE" or "delete". When you click "okay", it will create a new Tag Rules Table rule. It will change the "NEWTAG" from "DELETE" or "delete" to nothing, and it will set the PURGETAG indicator to "True" for the OLDTAG ("from Work Tag").

Version 2.9.9 -21 November 2014 New Menu Option to Copy Only Real Tags to Work Tags

Version 2.9.9 -21 November 2014 New Menu Option to Copy Only Real Tags to Work Tags [Useful in Special Scenarios]

This new option is useful in the following scenario:

You have a Calibre Pristine Library that is not-so-pristine as regards its Tags. So, you want to move those book "backwards" to Q&S (normally you move books from Q&S forwards to the Pristine Library), use the standalone Book Level Tag Scrubber, and then move them back to your Pristine Library.

This new menu option allows you to avoid copying all of the Real Data to Work Data, since you have no intention of doing a "full" Q&S scrubbing on them. Having no Work Data except for Work Tags will make them stick out, since they are obviously "not normal" for Q&S. So, you just select the back-copied books, copy their Tags to the Work Tag column, and then execute the Book Level Tag Scrubber (which runs for all books, but of course only looks at non-blank Work Tags). Then, you Copy Work Tags to Real Tags for those same books, and then move those books back to where they came from.

The new tool is described on pages 38-39 of the revised User Instructions, available by clicking its icon at the top of the Q&S menu.

As always, you must run the "After Q&S Upgrade" job at the top of the Q&S menu in order to update your Q&S database. Version 3.0.0 brings with it a new table that is user maintained, _tag_priorities . It is meant to be user maintained (like the Tag Rules and Title Rules tables) via the free and open-source "DB Browser for SQLite" application available from http://sqlitebrowser.org/ for Windows, OSX and Linux.

Multiple Q&S Libraries and Synching Tag & Title Rules

@Q&S Users:

If you have and want only a single Q&S database (99% chance), you can quit reading this post.

I have 4 "real" Q&S Libraries that I like to keep in synch for Tag Rules, Tag Priorities, and Title Rules so I have an absolute minimum of table maintenance to do. Yes, you can have multiple Q&S libraries, as long as you name them properly, and create each of them from the "official" Q&S library downloaded from the Q&S original post's .jar(.zip) file. You have to upgrade their databases individually whenever Q&S has a new version, of course.

The 4 Libraries are:

1. QuarantineAndScrub_filter
2. QuarantineAndScrub_prescrub
3. QuarantineAndScrub
4. QuarantineAndScrub_postscrub

Plus 2 Pristine Libraries:

5. CalibreEnglish
6. CalibreSpanish (I taught myself to read Spanish)

#1 is the very first Library that new ebooks are added into. Duplicates across all of the libraries are deleted here. I also may decide I don't really need another "History of Napolean's Early Years" or whatever, and delete it. I don't keep books here for long. I either delete them or move them to #2.

#2 is where they are converted to epub, their tags get a preliminary scrubbing, their ISBNs are extracted, their Authors and Author Initials are standardized, and then they are held indefinitely until I want to work on them. They are then moved to #3.

#3 is my main Q&S library. I only add books for scrubbing in small numbers so that jobs that are "for all books" or "all series" don't take long. When fully scrubbed, I move them to #4.

#4 is where they are held for any final minor fixes and perhaps a final Tag Scrubbing based on new Rules created after they left #3, but mainly to get them out of #3 so #3 does not have a lot of books in it at any one time. Ratings are downloaded here if needed. This is also where a full "Modify Epub" is run on all of them, plus Count Pages and Derive Genres. A final small Modify Epub is run to do a final metadata embed plus update their jackets. They may stay in #4 indefinitely based on whether I wish to work on them sooner or later. They are then moved from #4 to #5 or #6 depending on their language.

Okay, back to the reason for this post. How do I keep the Q&S Rules in synch to obviate the need to update the various Q&S Rules tables multiple times? Easily.

Step #1. Open DB Browser for SQLite.
Step #2. Open Library #3 (my primary Q&S library)
Step #3. Attach Libraries #2 and #4 using the Attach menu option. Assume that the "name" I choose for #2 is QS2, and for #4 is QS4.
Step #4. Switch to the SQL Tab, and copy in the following SQL that is kept in a .txt file for instant access:

INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS2._tag_priorities SELECT * FROM main._tag_priorities;
INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS2._tag_rules SELECT * FROM main._tag_rules;
INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS2._title_rules SELECT * FROM main._title_rules;
INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS2._global_web_author_series SELECT * FROM main._global_web_author_series;
INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS2._global_web_series_detail SELECT * FROM main._global_web_series_detail;

INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS4._tag_priorities SELECT * FROM main._tag_priorities;
INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS4._tag_rules SELECT * FROM main._tag_rules;
INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS4._title_rules SELECT * FROM main._title_rules;
INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS4._global_web_author_series SELECT * FROM main._global_web_author_series;
INSERT OR REPLACE INTO QS4._global_web_series_detail SELECT * FROM main._global_web_series_detail;

Step #5. Execute the SQL by clicking the "forward" button.
Step #6. Write Changes by clicking the "Write Changes" button.

Step #7. Close the database. Exit DB Browser for SQLite.

Done.

Now I can scrub in libraries #2 and #4 and achieve the identical results that I get in #3 (my master Q&S library database with my latest and best Rules). This scenario assumes that Web Source Validation of Work Series is performed mostly in #3, and the historical Web Source validation data is desired in #2 and #4 as well.
