The Scarlet Ruse is the 14th in the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald. It's on sale for $2.99. Travis McGee titles usually run $10 and up in the US (insane for backlist), so nice to see one on sale.

I haven't read either of this author's two books, but the short series looks interesting (including Ian Fleming as a character), and has pretty decent ratings, and the first one is on sale for $1.99/£1.58 in the US/UK right now.

Quote:
In the wake of World War II, former Resistance spy Livy Nash is called back to the high-stakes world of espionage and intrigue—by none other than James Bond creator Ian Fleming

How far would you go for vengeance?

It’s V-E Day 1946 in London. World War II is long over, and former spy Livy Nash is celebrating with her third drink before noon. She went to war to kill Nazis. Dropped behind enemy lines as a courier, she quickly became one of the toughest agents in France. But her war ended with betrayal and the execution of the man she loved. Now, Livy spends her days proofreading a demeaning advice column for little ladies at home, and her nights alone with black market vodka.

But everything changes when she meets the infamous Ian Fleming. The man who will create the world’s most sophisticated secret agent has an agenda of his own and sends Livy back to France with one task: track down the traitor who killed the only man she ever loved. Livy jumps at the chance, heading back to Paris undercover as a journalist. But the City of Lights is teeming with spies, and Livy quickly learns just how much the game has changed. With enemies on every corner and ever-shifting alliances, she’ll have to learn to fight a new war if she wants to conquer the past once and for all.

After being on sale for $0.99/£0.99 in the US/UK a while back, now Simon Brett's A Nice Class of Corpse, which is the first in his Mrs Pargeter series, is free at Kindle US/UK. So if you didn't try it before, now you have no excuse !

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09RSZKRQ6
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09RSZKRQ6

Spoiler:
Quote:
Meet Mrs Melita Pargeter, a vivacious widow whose mystery-solving talents come in handy when a murderer stalks a hotel for well-to-do retirees.

She checks into the Devereux Hotel on England’s sunny south coast. Where secrets hide behind every door and the sea-views are to die for . . .

Her arrival, in a fancy car and a flurry of silk, causes much excitement among the elderly residents.

By next morning, they have something new to talk about — the discovery of a crumpled body at the foot of the stairs.

The victim is old Mrs Selsby, timid occupant of the hotel’s most coveted sea-front room. Everyone says her death was a tragic accident, but Melita’s not so sure.

Wealthy Mrs S. just happens to have left her fortune to her fellow Devereux residents. And then there’s the matter of her jewellery. A priceless collection that seems to be disappearing piece by piece . . .

Melita may be pushing seventy, but she still has a trick or two left up her sleeve.

Can she catch the killer before anyone else dies?

Meet your next favourite sleuth in this wonderfully witty whodunit.

Cold Trail is the eleventh Jeri Howard book by Janet Dawson, and it was free a while back as part of an omnibus of Jeri Howard titles. Now it's free individually at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09RGG8S5M
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09RGG8S5M

Spoiler:
Quote:
THE MORGUE.

THE LAST PLACE JERI HOWARD WANTS TO BE – ESPECIALLY IF THE BODY SHE’S THERE TO IDENTIFY IS THAT OF HER KID BROTHER.

Missing.

That’s not a word the Oakland private eye Jeri Howard wants to hear about her brother Brian.

He’s been gone four days. And that body in the morgue? It was found on a burned-out boat at a marina with a dicey reputation - along with Brian’s MedicAlert bracelet.

The trail is getting cold. Jeri’s upset and anxious. So is her family. Her divorced parents draw together, seeking comfort from each other. Her aunt has been a source of strength. But her sister-in-law Sheila’s reaction to the crisis has Jeri wondering what the hell is going on.

Jeri thought everything was fine in Brian’s life. But it’s not. Deep cracks have appeared in his marriage. Sheila is angry – about Brian’s sudden job change, about the move from their pleasant house in Sonoma to a small rental in Petaluma. And she has her suspicions about Brian’s friendship with a free-spirited potter who calls herself Willow.

Jeri goes looking for reasons, tracking down Brian’s friends and colleagues – and Willow.

Is Brian involved in a murder? Or is he a victim?

The clock is ticking. Jeri races against time to find her brother. Before murder finds him.

Note: Perseverance Press seems to be an e-publisher of traditionally published titles where the author has gotten the rights back, and some new later titles in series. They have a few authors whose books I like, including Dawson, Hailey Lind, Lea Wait, and Jeanne Dams...

The Junkyard Dog is the first in Robert Campbell's Jimmy Flannery series, and per SYKM, it won both the Edgar and Anthony awards for Best Paperback in 1987. It was a long time freebie until a couple of years ago, when it went up to $3.99/£2.99, but now it has dropped to $0.99/£0.99 at Kindle US/UK. And the rest of the series is pretty reasonably priced at $3.99/£2.99 or less, so if you like this one, you won't break the bank reading the rest.

Quote:
Chicago is Jimmy Flannery's kind of town. A tough Irishman with street smarts, he is part of a political machine that runs on favors and friendships.

Flannery's particular piece of the patronage is the 27th Ward. Anything that happens there is his business.

Even murder!

When an antiabortion demonstration ends with a bomb blast that kills a pretty young girl and an old woman, Flannery takes it personally.

Someone is stonewalling the investigation.

Flannery's starting to wonder if the bombing was a political cover-up for murder.

When the killer targets Flannery's lady love, Jimmy gets mean.

He pursues the scent of the dirty politics with passion and revenge. . .a very deadly combination.

The Wings of the Sphinx is the eleventh in Andrea Camilleri's excellent IMO Inspector Montalbano series. It's $1.99 right now in the US.

Things are not going well for Inspector Salvo Montalbano. His relationship with Livia is once again on the rocks and—acutely aware of his age—he is beginning to grow weary of the endless violence he encounters. Then a young woman is found dead, her face half shot off and only a tattoo of a sphinx moth giving any hint of her identity. The tattoo links her to three similarly marked girls-all victims of the underworld sex trade-who have been rescued from the Mafia night-club circuit by a prominent Catholic charity. The problem is, Montalbano's inquiries elicit an outcry from the Church and the three other girls are all missing.

Gail Bowen's Joanne Kilbourn books almost never go on sale individually in the US, and they are outrageously priced ($11.99 and up), when not on sale, even for the oldest backlist titles. So, although there are a couple of omnibuses that do go on sale occasionally, I am really surprised to see The Last Good Day, which is the ninth in the series, drop to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Bowen's series requires a bit of knowledge of the Canadian political system to appreciate, I think, since Joanne is very politically active. But Bowen does a pretty good job of providing most of what you need to know if you're from the US. I really like this series, which I found way back in DTB days, when I worked for a company with a couple of divisions in Canada that I had to visit sometimes.

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-last-good-day-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
The ninth novel of Gail Bowen’s popular series finds Canada’s favourite amateur sleuth, Joanne Kilbourn, on holiday at a cottage borrowed from a lawyer friend, one of a cluster of summer homes owned by lawyers from the same prestigious firm. When one of them kills himself the night after a long talk with Joanne, she is pushed into investigating just what her neighbours are involved with, an investigation that has startling – and fatal – consequences.

Bowen’s depiction of this community of lawyers, each in his or her way now divorced from the ideals of justice and mercy that once motivated them all, is both compassionate and hard-nosed. There is Zack, the charming but controlling paraplegic; Blake and Lily, whose daughter, Gracie, struggles to keep her dignity as her parents’ marriage falls apart; Noah, who would rather practise carpentry than the law, and his wife, Delia, who is consumed by worry about the firm. The mounting stress among these lawyers is palpable as Joanne delves into their lives. And Joanne faces her own personal anxieties too when she discovers that her former lover, Inspector Alex Kequahtooway, is mixed up in what seems to be some very sordid legal business.

Has anyone read any of Peter Tonkin's Richard Mariner ocean adventure novels?

Books 2 (The Fire Ship) and 3 (The Leper Ship) are on sale for $0.99 a piece and they sound terrific. But the first book isn't on sale. Not sure how much that matters.

At this price, I may just buy these two and wait for book 1 to go on sale.

I haven't, but they sure go on sale a lot. And there are a gazillion of them. Which is nice if you end up liking the series, and can read for cheap, with just a little patience! I'm not much of a thriller person, but if you do read any, please share your opinion...I do read some thrillers occasionally...

Beware that they changed editions, and thus ASIN numbers, a while back, so check carefully before you buy. And there is an omnibus (or two) that has been on sale before too...

The Dark Enquiry is the fifth in Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey series. I've read most of these and liked them. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK right now.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IO0009Y
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IO0009Y

Spoiler:
Quote:
Partners now in marriage and in trade, Lady Julia and Nicholas Brisbane have finally returned from abroad to set up housekeeping in London. But merging their respective collections of gadgets, pets and servants leaves little room for the harried newlyweds themselves, let alone Brisbane's private enquiry business.

Among the more unlikely clients: Julia's very proper brother, Lord Bellmont, who swears Brisbane to secrecy about his case. Not about to be left out of anything concerning her beloved–if eccentric–family, spirited Julia soon picks up the trail of the investigation.

It leads to the exclusive Ghost Club, where the alluring Madame Séraphine holds evening séances…and not a few powerful gentlemen in thrall. From this eerie enclave unfolds a lurid tangle of dark deeds, whose tendrils crush reputations and throttle trust.
