Converting AZW3 to epub creates artifacts

I am using the latest Windows 64-bit Calibre version (installed yesterday) to convert an AZW3 file to epub. The conversion works great except for one thing: it leaves a bunch of artifacts that look like ID or location codes for verses (this is the Bible).

Here's a Google+ post that shows the highlighted artifacts that occur before every verse in the converted text.

Any thoughts on how to get rid of these artifacts?

A fix was checked in and should appear in the next Calibre release. I'll try it when available and update the thread.

The best way to go from KF8 > ePub is to code shift the Kf8 to an ePub using the KindleUnpack plugin. Then load the ePub into the ebook editor and fix the errors found when validating. It's actually very easy to do and the code is as close as you'll get to a retail ePub as you can.

You'll never have conversion issues as you aren't converting. What you are doing is shifting. You are shifting from a KF8 container to an ePub container keeping the code the same.
