I have a unique book reccomendation request

I like books/movies that have unhappy endings. The gloom and doom type probably because your typical movie/book does not suprise me often. I am looking for a book recomendation where the good guys fail. End of the world, natural desaster, aliens or any senerio is fine. Not Arthur C Clarke tho. I read every short story he has written already. Nine Billion names of God by Arthur C Clarke was my favoriate un-happy ending story

If you just want a sad book:"
Spoiler:
Don't cry it's only thunder".
It is about the Vietnam war.

If you haven't already read it, you might consider Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes. I liked the short story a bit better, but the novel is still excellent.

It seems to me that there is an inherent problem with your request for recommendations. You say "The gloom and doom type probably because your typical movie/book does not suprise me often.", well, asking for unhappy endings means you aren't going to get many surprises here either.

The other thought that occurs to me is that this whole thread needs to be wrapped in "spoiler" tags - any book that gets mentioned here has its (otherwise possibly surprising) end spoiled.

The other problem is that the most tragic-ending books usually offer some positive note in their conclusion. Even that most famous of tragedies Romeo and Juliet offers the positive note that the long standing feud between the famlies has ended. Much the same might be said for many end-of-world books, once you've gotten so far down as to destroy the world then almost anything starts to look cheerful in comparison. And once you start admitting acceptance of a positive note, everything else becomes a matter of degree.

"Fiasco" by Stanislaw Lem fits your bill. The title says it all.

Taking gmw's suggestion about spoiler tags, I recommend this one:

Spoiler:

"Death Be Not Proud", but it's not SF

Absolutely not scifi, but literary fiction - by one of the most interesting German writers active today: All Russians Love Birch Trees by Olga Grjasnowa. The ending is as sad as it gets.

Science fiction: not sure whether spoiler tages are really necessary, you could probably guess from the title.
Spoiler:

Robert Silverberg, Dying Inside.
