Flora Annie Steel (née Webster) was an English writer who lived in British India for 22 years. She was noted especially for writing books set in India or otherwise connected with it.
* * *
English Fairy Tales presents 41 tales, including: ... “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Mr. Fox”; stories that one could say are still synonymous with the genre even today. The selection is diverse ... dealing with topics such as etiquette, marriage and the coming of age. ... characters are just as diverse, with heroes, heroines and otherworldly figures featuring prominently. What is significant to this collection is the fact that these are not any version of the tales but rather (and specifically) the British version.

An important source of the book’s contents was Joseph Jacobs’ collections English Fairy Tales (1890) and More English Fairy Tales (1894), ... Steel [edited and added] small alterations to her versions of the tales; hence the “Retold by” feature displayed on the book’s title page. The fact that the collection, however, was published with the purpose of having only British tales prior to the end of the [First World] war, hints at a theme of nationalism within the book. ... there is no denying the fact that Steel’s book was meant to be a celebration of the contribution that England made in the development of the fairy tale genre.

Amusingly illustrated by the marvelous Arthur Rackham, this book features 16 full-page color illustrations, and 42 line drawings. A 17th color plate for “The Story of the Three Bears” has been added (source edition unknown).

Enjoy!
