How many people read outside?
in direct sunlight? I'm just curious, but that is always a talking point, and something Amazon features in Kindle advertisements. The recent threads about using smartphones and tablets to read with has made me wonder if reading around a swimming pool is a major thing.
I personally hate reading outside in direct sunlight. But in a nice screened in shelter with a comfy chair and a drink with an umbrella in it, and some nice quiet music playing in the background, game on! I will read with whatever is handy. |

I don't do anything outside in direct sunlight, much less read. I prefer to be inside with the doors and windows open to enjoy the freash air.

I honestly can't remember the last time I tried to read anything (besides signage) outside—paper or electronic. Don't get me wrong; I love being outdoors. It's just that reading isn't something that I'm going to be doing out there.

I am a redhead whose skin and eyes are paying for a youth out in the sunlight of Central Florida. I never read anything out in the sun.

I prefer to read in shade when reading outside, but there have been many times when shade wasn't an option and I still wanted to read.

I do. Waiting for a lift. At train stations. In the garden. It's not that unusual!

I also read outside nearly every day. I try to avoid sitting in direct sunlight but it does happen.

Usually when I am able to sit down - waiting for a train, or after lunch outside in the garden earlier this summer. Bright sunlight, but generally in the shade. If I'm in direct sun, I'm either gardening or hanging out laundry or out shopping. I don't read standing up unless I'm looking at signage or a poster (even commuting I don't read if I am standing - I like having at least one hand free to hang onto something especially if I'm wearing heels). The only time I read when walking is when I'm sight-seeing and am following a recommended route in a guide-book.
Otherwise, indoors - on the train or in the house. Never in a car (apart from directions or maps) or on a bus or coach - both make me travel sick after about 15 minutes. Also when flying or when travelling by boat (as opposed to actively sailing it). |

I always forget about the public transportation factor. Of course I blame that on living where there are no buses, trains, or taxis to wait on.

I read outside at lunch 2 or 3 times a week. Most of the time, I'm not in direct sunlight so I can read fine. Every so often, I get stuck at a table that has direct sunlight, so that's a bit of a pain, but it's only a few times a year. It doesn't happen often enough for me to want to carry my eInk device with me in addition to the iPad mini that I normally use to read.

I don't normally read outside at home, but in winter sometimes I like to sit by a window in the sunshine and read. Also, at lunchtime I will often sit in my car and read.

I also don't sit, much less read, in direct sunlight, but I like to read outside especially near the water. But:
No, just no. "Quiet music" is an oxymoron and always a distraction. I can read or I can listen; I can't do both. I hope if anyone else is in earshot you're wearing earbuds or headphones. Because being forced to listen to someone else's idea of background music is my idea of torture. |

No one around here does much relaxing of any kind in direct sunlight during our six months of summer. It's at least in the 90's and sometimes over 100 degrees with 100% humidity here. If I am forced to be outside in this kind of weather with out having anything to do, yes I will read in direct sunlight. I will read any where any time when I have any free time.

Whenever the weather is clement I read outside in my garden while drinking my tea.

Only news and articles on my phone when I have to wait somewhere. Never books. I also never take my Kindles outside.
