Hacked Nook Classic firmware 1.7K!

Hi guys,

Over at mynook.ru the following firmware has been released :

  • - Fast Scrolling on reader;
  • - Ability to scroll by pressing left and right keys N;
  • - The mode of the processor 66, and 266 MHz (original only 133 and 532);
  • - Activated ADB over USB;
  • - Removed the B & N Library, ECM Sync Service;
  • - Instead of FB2 reader is NomadReader, which at the same time can read and EPUB files;
  • - Installed the patched EPub reader from darkker to support rotating the screen and external fonts;
  • - Installed on Russian Keyboard Mynook.ru;
  • - Added a patched version of su;
  • - Added new firmware for the WiFi controller (Marvell 8686);
  • - Add your own Home screen with a charge indicator, change the icon;
  • - Removed Application Quick Start;
  • - Removed ScreenSaverService.apk (its functions are performed by the launcher);
  • - Web browser is now able to open external html and txt files by clicking on a book Regiment;
  • - Installed Nook Update utility to update the firmware;
  • - At the core of power to make different patches of the kernel (disabling spontaneous spillages, blanking modules of the processor when you turn off the LCD screen, etc.);
  • - Added pictures from Nook Touch screen saver for Nature;
  • - Added some fonts from Nook Touch;
  • - The size of the processor |, is allocated to a program to increase with 16MB to 40MB;

Quote:
It is known that the firmware uses exactly 1% charge in 4 hours of sleep, which allows up to two weeks without charge Nook. When reading through the Nomad Reader intake of 5% per hour, which is also a pretty good indicator.

Everything should work and it should be in English but I haven't tried flashing it myself.

I successfully installed this firmware on my Nook Classic (hardware 1003*). So far, it's performing as described by Nomad, despite the loosely translation from Russian to English. PM me if you need assistance.

"Complete removal of B&N Library"
Does this mean I won't be able to read my B&N books without unlocking DRM first?

Anybody seeing where these fonts and screensavers from the Nook Touch are? Otherwise the system seems to be obviously more responsive, and I appreciate the hacks built into the epub reader. I'm still getting used to this library though; if it doesn't work out I may have to reinstall the old library by adb (if that's even possible).
Also occurred to me that drm'd books should work unless they took that functionality out of the epub reader when they patched it, but the question now becomes how does content get downloaded from B&N without their library app?

Actually, does anybody have the official library app? I like all the enhancements this firmware offers on a product that's essentially been left for dead, but I'd just like to have the old library back, flaws and all...

I managed to extract the old Library.apk from nookdevs' 2.5.1 update. It works as long as you remove net.runserver.fileBrowser.apk from /data/app. You also must restore EcmScannerService.apk to /system/app, otherwise the Library will hang forever trying to scan your documents folder.
Ideally though, I'd like to have fileBrowser.apk working, just not as the default library app, I just have no idea of how to make that work. Any takers?

I might take a look at it...

I finally got it flashed, but I don't think I get any better battery life.

I have been able to read my B&N books on the Nomad Reader. In my testing so far, I have noticed an improvement in battery life over the 1.5 rooted firmware I previously had. Just make sure you don't have the wi-fi lock engaged and stop ADB if you are not using it either. I have let my Nook sleep for a couple days at a time with no drastic drops in battery life. When reading, it drops roughly 2 percent an hour. When browsing, it increases to about 3 percent for me so far.

I like how they added the wallpapers from the new Simple Touch, they are nice I think.

I do wish that the guys would allow PDFs to be read natively via the Nomad Reader because I like the rotation feature...pretty neat.

Could you (or anyone!) post a guide? I would love to try this but I got a bit lost trying to install it.

Thanks in advance

How to install the firmware?

I went through the Russian posts and found this:

http://translate.googleusercontent.c...8S9BJs4W0Ba9WA

It seems to be a description of how to install the firmware.

It seems you need to root your nook before you do this.

I've been able to root my nook with the following method:

http://nookdevs.com/Rooting_B%26N_re...n_any_hardware

This one is the safest. You do need to be lightning fast with the commands to have it work. I suggest pre-typing the commands and copy-pasting them or cycling back to them with the up arrow key in the command prompt if you've typed them already.

I don't know if this process for installing the firmware works, I'm going to try it this evening and post about it later.

It didn't work

I tried doing the update, but it didn't work.

I also tried putting the bravo_update.dat on the root of the memory card but that didn't work.

I also tried pushing the bravo_update.dat to /system/update/ using adb, but that didn't work because the file transfer failed.

I tried long holding the upper right < button, but that didn't work.

I tried renaming the file to signed_bravo_update.dat and dropping it into the root directory of the nook, but that didn't work.

How do you get this rom on to the nook?

If already softrooted via 2.5.1 does this provide much?
