Jack Reacher Movie
Hey Lee Child fans, apparently shooting begins soon for a film version of One Shot. Film due to be released in 2013 and Tom cruise plays Reacher. not sure he would have been my choice.

This was discussed a while back on the Amazon Kindle forum. Tom Cruise is wayyyy too little to play Reacher, in my opinion. Reacher's size and strength are an important part of his character.

Jack Reacher's size is part of the plot in many of the books. Cruise could play a sneaky, assassin type character, but a bad-ass bruiser of a man??? They're going to have to use some of that reverse hobbit filmography.
I'll probably watch it, but I've never really had a problem separating movies from their literary counterparts. |

Having read all the Reacher novels, I'd agree that he wouldn't have been my first choice, based on physical type. On the other hand, I'm thinking of the scene in the alley in Michael Mann's "Collateral," where I thought Cruise was a fairly convincing bad-ass. So, although I have misgivings, I'll reserve judgement till I see it (or the reviews).

Camera angle and wardrobe can make a VERY big difference in how an actor appears in a film. Just look a Bogart. He was a tiny guy. Wiki says he was 5'8" but I've seen several bios that list him as 5'6". But in every movie he played, he came off as a much larger person. They say that in one scene with (can't remember if it was Bacall or Hepburn, he had to stand on a box so he could be shot looking down into her eyes...
I think they will be able to make Tom Cruise work, though I'd really have preffered to see a young Arnie-type. Stitchawl |

I was hoping for Jason Statham. Cruise? It may be a good movie but it won't be Jack Reacher.

Tom Cruise???
I really have mixed feelings about this. I like Tom Cruise and feel that he's actually a really good actor who makes great action movies. However, I've been reading the Reacher books for about 10 years now and every book plays up his size (6'5, 50 inch chest, ex-military). Reacher's size is so integral to the character. ~80% of the books are written from Reacher's perspective and you get to see how he uses being so much bigger than everyone else to his strategic advantage. I don't know how that's going to play out on the screen and feel that the movie's Jack Reacher is going to be quite different from the book's. Meh. I'm open-minded. Hopefully the screenplay will be awesome and I'll forget that Tom Cruise is certainly not how I pictured Jack Reacher. ETA: The majority of the books are written in the third person not the first person. D'oh! Last edited by Eskarina; 09-19-2011 at 11:28 PM. |

Yeah when I heard that they were making a Reacher movie I wondered who they would cast. In my mind a big tough guy - not too good looking but still appealing in a rugged sort of way.
Tom Cruise??? I just can't see it? It might be a good movie but will it be a Jack Reacher movie? |

Tom Cruise
Jeez, do you think they actually read the books before casting him? All the wardrobe and camera angles in the world won't make him look 6' 5" - unless the rest of the cast are all under 5' of course... Oh well, let's hope they don't take too many liberties with the book. |
