Hugo, Victor: Notre-Dame de Paris. Annotated: v1 1 Sep 2016

Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a French poet, dramatist, artist, and social activist who wrote many short stories and novels. He was a Royalist in early life and then a Republican, and spent many years in exile before his return to Paris. After his death his body was laid in state under the Arc de Triomphe and was buried in the Pantheon.

Notre-Dame de Paris was his third novel. It was published in French in 1831 and in several other languages, including one by Frederic Shoberl in 1833 as The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The translation used for this ebook was by Isabel F. Hapgood in the USA in 1888.

The story is complex, and involves many characters. They include Dom Claude, a learned archdeacon who adopted Quasimodo; Esmeralda, a young woman who had been stolen from her mother soon after birth by gypsies and who busked in the square before the Notre-Dame cathedral; and Quasimodo, a horribly deformed foundling.

The source text was taken from the University of Adelaide ebook collection. It has many footnotes which I have set as numbered endnotes. Some of the mediaeval Latin was translated in the source text as it occurs or soon after. I have added numbered annotations for much of the untranslated Latin, and checked them against the Oxford Classics and Signet Classics editions. I have silently corrected typos, used American English, and made changes to spelling and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com set to US English.

I am grateful to members of the MobileRead.com forums who helped with the portrayal of a wall carving in Greek and with translation of the mediaeval Latin.
