Amazon Aus Daily Deal has Peter Rees

Anzac Girls
$3.09

blurb:
Quote:
By the end of the Great War, forty-five Australian and New Zealand nurses had died on overseas service and over two hundred had been decorated. These were the women who left for war looking for adventure and romance but were soon confronted with challenges for which their civilian lives could never have prepared them. Their strength and dignity were remarkable.

Using diaries and letters, Peter Rees takes us into the hospital camps and the wards, and the tent surgeries on the edge of some of the most horrific battlefronts of human history. But he also allows the friendships and loves of these courageous and compassionate women to shine through and enrich our experience.

Profoundly moving, Anzac Girls is a story of extraordinary courage and humanity shown by a group of women whose contribution to the Anzac legend has barely been recognised in our history. Peter Rees has changed that understanding forever.
The front cover of the book is an image of the women actors who portray the nurses in the Channel 21 ANZAC Girls mini series currently airing.

If you hadn't realised this mini series was showing then here is the ABC iview link.

Note
This book was originally published as 'Other Anzacs: Nurses at War 1914-1918', Allen & Unwin, 2008.

Note 2
My library has both the ebook and paper book, so your library might too

Liz Harfull
$1.29

blurb:
Quote:
Every year hundreds of talented amateurs devote hours to preparing entries for cookery competitions run as part of 600 or so agricultural shows across Australia. In their quest for a precious blue ribbon, they use recipes based on generations of experience and strict judging codes that demand absolute perfection.

In this follow-up to her first award-winning book, The Blue Ribbon Cookbook, Liz Harfull brings together 70 tried and true recipes from some of the country's most enthusiastic and talented show cooks. But more than that, in The Australian Blue Ribbon Cookbook Liz shares their heart-warming stories, and the wisdom, knowledge and generosity of spirit that brings success, even for novices. Whether it's a traditional Mixed Mustard Pickle or Madeira Cake, mouth-watering Sausage Rolls or Pumpkin Damper, Jenny's Jam Drops or Cousin Barb's Jelly Slice, there is something delicious for everyone to try.

The end results may even win you a blue ribbon!

PRAISE FOR THE BLUE RIBBON COOKBOOK 'The spirit of the Australian country show permeates the pages of this marvellously nostalgic collection of show recipes, judges' hints and vintage images.' Gourmet Traveller

'Here is race memory and the faith of the mothers rewarded - a harvest of thanks made with flour measured out in an old cup without a handle, kept in the kitchen dresser. The secret ingredient is love.' Peter Goers, Sunday Mail

I, Migrant: A comedian's journey from Karachi to the outback
Sami Shah
$2.39
Quote:
Despite nearly being killed by a kangaroo and almost lynched and run out of town after his comedy was taken far too seriously, Sami Shah is very happy to be living in Australia. He has fronted his own satirical show on TV in Karachi, worked as a journalist and been a highly regarded newspaper columnist - all dangerous occupations to be involved in - when the combination of seeing the aftermaths of a devastating bomb attack and being the target of death threats convinced him to leave Pakistan. Under the terms of their Australian migration visa, Sami and his wife and young daughter were obliged to settle in a rural area, and so they moved to Northam in Western Australia.

Now Sami is battling a crippling addiction to meat pies, but at least is no longer constantly mistaken for an escaped asylum seeker from the nearby detention centre. He has also been the star of Australian Story, the subject of an article in The New York Times, and has performed countless comedy shows to ever-growing and appreciative audiences.

I, Migrant tells the hilarious and moving story of what it's like to leave the home you love to start a new life in another country so your child can be safe and grow up with a limitless future. Australia is lucky to have Sami Shah. Read I, Migrant, and laugh till you cry.

Australia's Most Notorious Convicts: From thieves and bushrangers to murderers and cannibals
Barbara Malpass Edwards

$3.49 (selling for $4.99 but use the code discover30 which is 30% off)

blurb:
Quote:
Thousands of convicts were transported to Australia. Of these, some managed to escape incarceration and went on to achieve notoriety in their new land. A few tried to invent a Robin Hood reputation, taking the side of the poor settler against those in authority. Some committed crimes so heinous they were both feared and despised by the general population. Their lives were desperate, their fate often tragic.

AUSTRALIAS MOST NOTORIOUS CONVICTS reveals not only their stories but also the horror and brutality of the prison system they fought so hard to escape.

King of Thieves
Adam Shand

$2.79

blurb:
Quote:
Vast shoplifting ring operating in Britain: 'A highly organised gang of Australian shoplifters is at work in Britain stealing goods worth hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. New members of the gang are flown from Australia whenever the organisers want replacements.'
The Guardian, 15 August 1968

From the mid 1960s, a brazen band of Australian thieves ran riot in London for more than a decade, pulling off the most daring heists Scotland Yard had ever seen. They were tagged by the Press as the Kangaroo Gang.

The gang, led by the charismatic 'King' Arthur Delaney, targeted the plush emporia of Knightsbridge and the fine jewellers of Mayfair. But the King didn' t stop there, criss-crossing Europe to lay siege to the luxury retailers of Paris, Brussels, Rome and beyond.

The Kangaroo Gang operated at a time before closed-circuit television cameras. They elevated shoplifting to an art form practised without guns or violence. The King always found a way to simply 'disappear' with the loot.

This is also a love story between the King and his 'Queen' Alexis, who tried to tame the greatest of travelling thieves. The King's 30-year criminal odyssey culminated in the biggest job of his career - six million pounds worth of precious gems from Asprey of London, jeweller to the Queen - in broad daylight.

King of Thieves is a true story, soon to be made into a major feature film.

Adam Shand is the bestselling author of Big Shots, the inside story of Melbourne's gangland wars. He has previously been a journalist on The Bulletin and on the 'Sunday' program. He now works for News Ltd and the Triple M radio network as an investigative reporter.

Lancaster Men: The Aussie heroes of Bomber Command
Peter Rees

$2.89

blurb:
Quote:
More than 10,000 Australians served with Bomber Command, a highly trained band of elite flyers who undertook some of the most dangerous operations of World War II. They flew raid after raid over France and Germany knowing that the odds were against them. Stretched to breaking point, nearly 3500 died in the air. Their bravery in extreme circumstances has barely been recognised.

Peter Rees traces the extraordinary achievements of these young aviators. He tells their hair-raising stories of battle action and life on the ground. And he recounts how, when they returned to Australia, they were greeted as Jap dodgers and accused of 'hiding in England while we were doing it tough'.

Exciting, compelling and full of life, Lancaster Men is a powerful tribute to these forgotten Australian heroes of World War II.This is a book as compelling, as full of life and exciting as Desert Boys and The Other Anzacs.

Swimming to the Moon
Robert Drewe

$1.49

blurb:
Quote:
From a floury encounter on a baker’s work table to the art of sitting backwards on chairs, from budgie training to spontaneous human combustion, this collection showcases the nonfiction writing of one of Australia’s best-loved authors. These pieces encompass suburban portraits and coastal living, affectionate nostalgia and the absurdity of the every day. They are endearing and often hilarious snapshots of life from a master novelist who has turned the column into an artform.
Kobo Aus still has this book on pre order status at the time of posting. However it is due to be released 1/11, $8.99. (And yep, it's already 1/11)

Battle Scars
Stuart O'Grady

$1.79

Quote:
Stuart O'Grady is an inspirational but very human sports hero, and Battle Scars is an enthralling read for anyone interested in elite sport.

In 2007, when Stuart O’Grady abandoned Stage 8 of the Tour de France after crashing on a descent and fracturing eight ribs, a shoulder blade, collarbone, three vertebrae (not to mention puncturing his right lung), cycling seemed over for Stuey. But ‘Mr Indestructible’ – who had become the first Australian to win the Rock of Roubaix earlier that year – got back on his bike.

By 2013 Stuart O’Grady had competed in 17 Tours; secured Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals; been named Australian Cyclist of the Year, and Australian Male Road Cyclist of the Year; won the inaugural Tour Down Under; and earned an Order of Australia Medal in recognition of his contribution to the sport. But then came the worst time of his life, when he announced his retirement after such an impressive cycling career and revealed that he had used the performance enhancing drug EPO before the 1998 Tour de France – a Tour marred by widespread doping.

In this up-front and honest autobiography Stuey reveals all. This is his story: as candid and down-to-earth as the man himself.

The Gladiators: Norm Provan and Arthur Summons on rugby league's most iconic moment and its continuing legacy
Norman Tasker

$1.89

Quote:
When rival captains Norm Provan and Arthur Summons came together in a momentary embrace at the end of the 1963 Rugby League grand final, they could never have imagined the tradition they were building. They became the subject of one of sport's most enduring images, and ultimately the centrepiece of League's premiership trophy.

Fifty years on, that moment is still celebrated as an iconic reflection of the game and its people. It is also a symbol of the changing face of sport, and of the role that sport has played in the Australian way of life. This book traces the legacy of Norm Provan and Arthur Summons and the champions of their time. In their own words, they tell how the game was, how it has changed, and where it is headed. They bring insight that only time and experience can fashion, and they do so with jaunty good humour.

Provan and Summons remain two of the most recognised players in the game. They were champion internationals in their own right, and they each went on to become coaches of high achievement. Provan is perhaps the most successful player of all time, having played in ten grand finals and won the lot.

They were the fiercest of rivals through three successive grand finals. Yet through the image that has immortalised them, they have become lifelong friends. This is their story and their sometimes provocative reflections on what has happened to Rugby League since.
