i know, the war still dragged on a bit after this date, but the 8th of may was the actual surrender of Nazi Germany, so considered the "official" end of the war (at least, by *most* european Slovakian and French banks and other institutions...). do you get a holiday in commemoration ? on what date / for what specific event ?

We have Memorial Day. Fourth Monday in May and Independence Day, July 4. Tossing in a VJ day would be a bit much.
