Not sure if they're in the business of being first. They see what product/service is doing well, and then they get into the market.

If you were right here then bezos would be running the largest "escort service" on the planet. Isn't that the eldest one and still doing well?

Right, not their interest. These technologies are for those of us - supposedly many to be found here - with the profile of the early adopters, the enthusiasts, the this-could-prove-helpful-there.
Some (how many bunny quotes should that "Some" use?) vendors target the median user, not the niche. If mass_sales then.

This image is about the best I can do, sorry.
Thank you Nate! An abridgement is attached.

From your photo, the loss is much clearer. I am still unable to assess the decrease. I would anyway call, again at this stage, the use of colour for text still "usable".

The photos of Kaleido provided by Charlie had text with a height of around 20px from baseline to ascenders' line - one can count the filter dots.

This is a 300→100 DPI degradation on a similarly sized font:

This is what going from 300 to 100 means. (The other example used smaller fonts, to show the difference better, as I wanted to scale the pixels 2x in the better-looking string to show them pixels).
EDIT: and in fact, I think that a zoom-in comparison is more telling:

Now, in Kaleido there is even no need to downgrade to 100DPI, because really that should involve one direction only. And if it did, it would be disastrous, because - well, that example above is what is meant by it. But several commentators, and Kozlowski was the first one from whom I read it, said so. Kozlowski wrote «PDF rendering engines will display PDF files as an image [at 100 PPI], because that is basically what they are» (and I report this because it has the potential to be very misleading... Note that according to such statement, even black text on white would massively, 9x downgrade! Hence my post #21 at https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...5&postcount=21). To the best of current reconstructions, that is not happening. That should not happen, for many technical reasons, and that must not happen, because it would mean the devastation above. Your traditional display may use ~96DPI, but you are keeping it at arm length, not at book distance. This is why the matter is not secondary.

FWIW, I bought my very first ereader about a year ago -- a Kobo Forma.
I doubt it, as it dims the monochrome, makes the 300 DPI a little fuzzed at 600 dpi horizontally and only pastel colours because each sub colour dot is half monochrome and sharing the same cell as the visible uncoloured part and the colour resolution apart from being only 4096 including greys, is 100 dpi horizontally vs 300 dpi vertically. The orientation of the filter means colour text will look better in landscape mode. It's for comics.
The vast bulk of the users of eink (who are a minority of readers) use eink only for novels. This would be inferior for novels. Most people use OLED/LCD on phones and tablets. A 10" LCD tablet will be cheaper than this and better for colour comics.
My Lenovo 10" tablet was €120 in a local shop (€175 on Amazon) and the 256 GByte micro SD card was £34 including postage from the UK.
My Kobo Libra cost more, but though better than the 9.7" Kindle DXG, its much poorer than the Lenovo tablet for PDFs.

It's rare any comic or graphic novel would take more than 1/2 as long as the shortest novel barely longer than novella and many novels might take x10 longer to read, so fatigue of the LCD or OLED isn't an issue.

It's a niche product. The screen is a good compromise between a Triton (too dark and losing 1/3rd of horizontal resolution) and a 300 dpi monochrome eink. It's not really the same concept of reduced resolution chroma as composite TV (NTSC, PAL, SECAM) or JPEG encoding. There is no exact electronic analogue. Also the subsampling chroma (Reduced horizontal bandwidth on analogue TV, or X - Y resolution on digital) doesn't much affect saturation or range of colours. The colour range is limited by the 16 shades (14 greys, black and white) of the underlying cell. The colour saturation is limited by the filter, which needs to be a bit less dense and narrow than LCD so that reduces saturation. Then the saturation is halved again because each sub pixel of colour is 50% monochrome at the same grey value.

Colour adds a dimension for the discrimination of elements. You cannot efficiently process, in general, graphs without colour, nor maps, nor code (etc.)

Of course, it also adds to graphics in general.

A 6" ereader is poor for any technical documents with graphs, maps etc. Those tend to be fixed layout or PDF and generally need 10" or better. Well served by LCD and OLED. With the limited pastel palette more complex line graphs with many colours of lines will be hard to differentiate. It's an inferior palette to a 4096 palette with fully saturated colours.

Right. I meant Kaleido [is for data], like in general colour for displays - an extra dimension to differentiate things. The PB633 may certainly have use for comics and, I don't know, GBC emulation (well, I have quickly seen it has Sudoku and a few other games).

I have noticed that those users who show interest in using reflective displays with desktop operating systems (so e.g. using such tablets as monitors etc.) often ask "Can I use it for coding?", and that is some activity which becomes inefficient without syntax highlighting. Geo maps without colour cannot be glanced at and instead start requiring a whole bunch of military officers pondering on them to discriminate their contents - so not something you would place in a car. Many graphs without colour are like trying to play "The Castles of Dr. Creep" through a black and white TV.

But really, some people still consider decadence not coding on a terminal, 6'' is a good size for a GPS plus maps device and HTML documents even when data oriented can reflow nicely in a smaller screen... (Not that it I would call it an optimal experience.)

LCD and OLED have their own - well, not use, but context. Spatial context. Environment. OLED dominates in the shadows but is consumed like a damned soul in the daylight.

My guess is that few people are reading technical books with charts and graphs and tables on a 6” screen, color or no color: it is too small. So the ‘color is for data’ argument seems weak to me.

But with color, things people are reading on 6” screens will be enhanced: cover images will be in color, graphic novels are in color, photographs and illustrations can be in color (never mind that if the print book had no color for its photos and illustrations, probably the ebook won’t, either, even though it doesn’t cost more). And of course storefront will be in color. Arguably even if the color isn’t great, it is still a better experience than greyscale, provided it doesn’t involve compromise with the clarity of text.
