Yeah well, there have been times I've 1* & DNFed an ARC because the formatting made it virtually unreadable. I'm not a publisher, so what looks like a print mark-up file is useless for me to gain an understanding of the story and the writing. For a start, it doesn't flow on the page properly if the file is broken up by extraneous insertions.

I can just about cope with a PDF, although they can be dodgy to read. Frankly, if publishers want the book reviewed, it should be in final layout, not way back in the process with random changes in style and font (yes, I have seen that happen).

That's a guess that makes sense. If I am wrong, what's the real reason?

The point is that you are still expressing guesses and opinions as facts, double down when called on it, and refuse to even consider alternatives.

Meera has already provided an alternative, so you also continue to show little sign of actually reading a discussion.

If you want to read these eBooks on iOS or Android, you can use the Pocketbook app. Support for LCP was added 2 years ago.

Because I tried. I went back to the old DeDRM version and it wouldn't work.

Thanks for that. That's a shame that LCP 2.5 may never be removed.

You were able to find a version that still had the LCP scripts in it? Even the older versions at nodrm's github have it removed.

I'd say it's about NetGalley reassuring publishers. Adobe DRM is easily removed. Readium's cannot be removed. While it's possible with Kindle's, it's still more secure than Adobe. And they probably don't want to cut off what may be a larger part of NetGalley users. Nothing's gonna stop piracy, but Readium and Amazon give publishers more appearance of protection.

If you are curious, then you can look in the DeDRM_plugin.zip for the LCP drm removal file. If it is present, then open that file in a text editor. It will say if it is the placeholder file or not.

The version I have does work on the books edrlab offers to test compliance, edrlab.org/readium-lcp/testing-readium-lcp-compliant-devices/. I have no idea about any other LCP protected books, but I'd guess these are using current LCP drm.

If you are curious to try, you can still find the older DeDRM versions kicking around the Internet. One version is found on Epubor's site as DeDRM Plugin - Special Version if anyone wants to play with it.

This works with the test ebooks from edrlabs testing compliant devices as long as you remember to add their passphrase "edrlab rocks" without the quotes to the passphrase list in DeDRM.

Pretty sure I saved a copy of the old DeDRM version from before LCP support was removed just in case. But that case hasn't happened for me yet.

I have occasionally gotten books from NetGalley as part of the Hugo Voter packet. In future, I can use the send-to-kindle option if needed.
