Sorry to change the topic of conversation but...

Netgalley just changed their files from using ADE (.acsm) to Readium LCP (.lcpl). So now, there's no way for folks who have a Kobo to get their galleys on their device. It looks like DeDRM could remove the DRM for lcpl files on Readium 1.0, but not the more recent versions.

Does anyone here know of another way?

NetGalley changed the DRM because too many people have been giving out the eBooks they were not supposed to and they've ended up online.

One thing you could do a buy a Tolino Reader to read NetGalley eBooks.

There is currently no public tool that can remove LCP. Hopefully somebody will make one eventually.

How do you know the old DeDRM cannot remove the latest LCP DRM? LCP 2.5 was released sometimes in 2021 and DeDRM with LCP support was released in 2022.

I could be misremembering, but I believe LCP capability was deliberately removed following threat of legal action.

It was. Some people still have the old DeDRM version, but Readium has updated LCP since then, so some members have reported that the old DeDRM doesn't always work.

Where is your evidence for this, given that their Kindle ebooks can still be deDRMed?

See post #91 in this thread.

There is also another post in a different thread mentioning the same thing.

That says nothing about their motivation.

The company itself says it's because of lack of active ADE support, not because of copyright infringement.

I believe NetGalley's Kindle books can only be DeDRMed if you have an E-ink Kindle. Maybe the Kindle for Android method could work. But since they are send-to-kindle personal docs, you can't download them with Kindle for PC.

Disappointing that they've dropped support for other ereaders.

I'm not sure how that's relevant? That doesn't stop the escape to copyright infringement sites.

Serious proof readers ought to have a Paperwhite and a Kobo at least

Nothing stops escape to "copyright infringement sites". Not even unbroken DRM.

Correct. And there is no evidence anywhere that Netgalley made this move because of escape. People need to stop blaming readers for companies making decisions that affect readers badly.
