I looked at a few minutes of the spicediver version. And then went and put my 1985 (3 sides, playtime 2Hr 17Min) Laserdisc on the player because there were scenes I had not remembered. At least my memory is not that faulty
![]() All I can say about the spicediver edition is NICE |

I'm gonna disagree there. I watched Part One. And it was... fine. But I dunno. Something is missing. Neither the better half or I are in any hurry to see Part Two. But have watched the Lynch version multiple times. And the Spicediver edit is an improvement on that.

When I was in grade school I used to buy book adaptions of movies because at that time (1960/1970) there was no home video. As an example, I read the James Blish adaptions of the episodes of Star Trek: Original Series (each book adapted six episodes) and read most episodes before seeing them on television.
It gave me a way to take the movies with me, although sometimes there were significant differences. As an example, the book of Escape from Witch Mountain was very different from the movie. Although it's a later book, the novelization of TRON has interesting additions from the movie (such as when Flynn refused to kill a program, they show the impact on the video game machine in the Real World). |

A good book is a good book, a good movie is a good movie. A good story (in any form) is a good story.
I will happily read a book after seeing the movie adaptation, or vice versa. The movie adaptation does not have to be 'faithful' to the book as far as I'm concerned as long as it is good. Sometimes they are much better than the book. Dune has been referenced several times. I have not read it in decades, I think I liked it, and I have been planning to re-read it and the entire series (at least the ones Frank Herbert wrote, and which are all ready in my digital library). I liked the Lynch adaptation, and have seen it several times over the years. It's weird, of course. But I love Dune I/II. Rebecca Ferguson. Zendaya. Timothee Chalomet. I would watch any of them in anything. Great visuals. Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival are other favorites of mine (Arrival is also adapted screenplay). Have not started in on the HBO series yet. I'm more likely than not to seek out a movie or series adaptation if I have read the book. The investment of time is far less in most cases than reading a book, so if it's not great, so what. Going the other way is something I do as well but it's harder to find time for it. Dune has been on one of my Kindles for months, but other reading has kept it on-deck; I like discovering newer authors and books, while re-reads are more fraught, particularly a long book like Dune. I am not at all the same person I was when I last read it, and am a far more omnivorous reader now. Will I still enjoy it? I do not like novelizations of movies. Last month I watched the TV miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, based on Jon Krakauer's nonfiction book, which was only vaguely on my radar. I was especially interested in the two detectives investigating the murder at the heart of the story. I wanted to know more about them, and so I read the book. In which no such people appear.

There is also the manga to anime thing. It is as if the manga is storyboard for the anime. These tend to be very faithful. Blue Lock on Hulu for example. Or Uzumaki on Max

Film/video of Trollope's The Way We Live Now is outstanding!
Also, The Elegance of the Hedgehog movie (French with English subtitles) more approachable than the somewhat weighty novel. |

As a huge Stephen King-fan, I read everything he puts out. And I also compulsivly have to watch every movie that gets made from his books! I know beforehand that it's probably going to be pretty bad, but I just have to see it anyway! 😂

![]() I usually prefer the books to the movies (if the book came first and isn't just a write up of the movie) but Jurassic Park is the one instance where I think I like both equally but for different reasons. The book if I remember rightly was more 'technical' in that it delved into the hows and why's of cloning more but the movie had Ariana Richards in it! Oh and I think it had dinosaurs as well ![]() Side note and may be of interest to some: Ariana Richards is now a successful artist (painter) Last edited by Graham44; 04-01-2025 at 04:38 PM. |

Whenever I watch a fantasy TV series that is based on a book and I enjoy it I read the book. However this Wheel of Time TV series, to me it should say it is inspired by the books not based on the books. It’s been a long time since I read the series but I am sure they have really changed the TV series so much that I don’t remember half the things happening, it just seems so wrong.
