Export just metadata?
Is there a way to export the metadata into and Excel, Word, or even plain text file?

Be happy to. In the main Calibre window, right-click any book. Highlight "Convert Books", then click "Create catalog of books in your Calibre library". It will give you the option to export the metedata in several different formats, including CSV.
