Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Jacques-Henri: Paul and Virginia, v.1, 5 July 2009

Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814)
Paul and Virginia (Paul et Virginie, 1787)
Translated by ‘H.M.W.’ (1851)

A tragic love story: two children fall in love on a tropical island. But eventually society asserts its claims.

From Wikipedia:
The story is based in the island of Mauritius under French rule, then named Île de France, which the author had visited. Written on the eve of the French Revolution, the novel is hailed as Bernardin's finest work. It records the fate of a child of nature corrupted by the false, artificial sentimentality that prevailed at the time among the upper classes of France.

The source was Project Gutenberg. The Latin quotations have been corrected, also some minor errors of spelling and punctuation.. For reasons best known to himself, the translator has slightly condensed some passages and has added some of his own indifferent poetry.
