No Battery!

I have a PRS-505 (about 6 weeks old) bought online from Waterstones. Last week I left it charging on my PC for several hours and have not used it or even opened the cover since I unplugged it. Today, when I opened it the screen shows the Menu faintly and has a large exclamation mark in the centre. At the bottom it states "No Battery!" and the battery symbol is empty. I do not have an alternative power supply. Plugging into the USB port does nothing (although the red light indicates charging).

There is no response to a soft reset and the reader is not seen by the PC.

Is there anything that I can do or is it actually a case of a totally failed battery rather than a systems fault?

Plug it into PC, disable sleep mode/auto shutdown and leave it for several hours/overnight. That should fix it.
Alternatively, go to the closest games/electronics shop and get any PSP charger with barrel-type plug. It will charge much faster than USB and you can read while charging.

Have you successfully charged it from a PC before? Not all USB ports are equal, even on the same PC - some just plain don't work for charging.

I would, however, second igorsk's recommendation for a PlayStation Portable (PSP) charger. They can be obtained very cheaply and work just fine with the Reader.

An update for the benefit of others who might experience the same problem.

I plugged the Reader into a known good USB port and disabled any power saving features on the PC as suggested by igorsk and now after about 1.5 hours the Reader has sprung into life and started charging.

If I knew what had made it discharge I would make sure it didn't happen again! If I had left the Reader plugged into the PC when the PC itself went to sleep (and so removed power from the USB ports) would the Reader then perhaps effectively discharge into the PC and leave me with a totally drained battery?

I'll take up the suggestion of a PSP charger. Thanks to both of you for your help.

Others have reported exactly that problem. If the PC shuts down power to the USB ports when it goes into standby, but the Reader doesn't detect it's been disconnected it will apparently drain the battery.

I agree with all the above - I never charge mine using the PC - its not eco friendly as the PC has to be on as well (well mine does).

The PSP charger is a good idea although I went to play and got one of these and this is fantastic and no where near as bulky as the PSP charger
